The Ritual and Its Weight

The Matangi Homa is a fire offering to Matangi, the ninth of the ten Mahavidyas, whom the tradition calls the Shyamala of sound — the Devi who governs speech, learning, music and the ordered mind. Where other rites ask for wealth or protection, this one asks for something quieter: that what you read stays with you, that what you know arrives on your tongue when it is asked for. Priests kindle the kunda, invoke her in the flame, and offer ghee and herbs through her mantra while your name and nakshatra are spoken in the sankalpa.

Students, researchers and those facing competitive examinations turn to the Matangi Homam when effort alone is not translating into clarity. The scriptures place her at the seat of Vak — expressed speech — and prescribe her worship for those who must remember, reason and answer. Because she is also Raja Matangi, the minister-queen of Sri Vidya's court, the raja matangi homam benefits described in tradition extend to composure in interviews, viva and any moment where you must speak well under watch.

ॐ ह्रीं क्लीं हूं मातङ्ग्यै फट् स्वाहा Salutations and offering to Devi Matangi — may she awaken speech, learning and clarity within me.

Sacred timing

The most auspicious days for a Matangi Homa

These are the windows the tradition favours.

Matangi Jayanti

Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, her own day, when Mahavidya upasana is held to be most fruitful.

Navaratri and Fridays

Devi's days. The third and eighth nights of Navaratri, and Fridays through the year, are widely chosen.

Mula and Hasta nakshatra

Stars associated with learning and skilled expression, favoured for rites of study and speech.

Before an examination season

Many families book the homa a few weeks ahead of boards or entrance tests, at the start of serious preparation.

You do not need to wait for one of these days. Whenever you book, our astrologers calculate the muhurta from your own birth chart — a date chosen for you personally, which tradition regards as more precise than a calendar date chosen for everyone. If you would like the homa on one of the days above, tell us at checkout and we will fix the muhurta within it.

What you receive

The sealing of the Matangi Yantra

The Matangi Yantra is consecrated over three days — Jala (holy-water consecration with mantras), Prana (life force through pranayama & chants) and Jeeva Pratishta (awakened with 108 recitations & offerings) — then present through your homa, receiving the energies raised in the fire. When your homa concludes, it is rolled and locked inside its silver amulet according to Agama vidhi — the practice by which those energies are held within a consecrated object rather than dispersing. It is why a homa performed at our ashram can still reach a devotee ten thousand miles away: what the fire raised travels to you, sealed.

Yantra Pujas inside our consecrated sanctum

48-Day Anushthan (optional) — daily pujas for 48 days — the 27 Nakshatras + 12 Rashis + 9 Planets — then sealed in a silver amulet of approximately 2–4 inches. Performed in our consecrated sanctum at the Yagna Ashram.

A note on sacred tradition

As per strict Agama vidhi, no videography is permitted inside the temple sanctum — this preserves the pure sacred energies and undisturbed divine focus of the ritual. The main homa is respectfully telecast live from outside the sanctum.

Homas are telecast openly on our YouTube channel so that devotees everywhere may witness the rituals — and because we believe you should be able to see our work before you trust us with yours. Your sankalpa names you and your family, so if you would rather your ceremony were not public, choose the private telecast option at checkout and it is streamed as an unlisted link, which does not appear on our channel or in search, though anyone who has the link can watch it and share it.

We state this plainly — transparency about what tradition forbids filming, and about what is public, is part of performing these rituals honestly.

How to wear your energised Matangi Yantra

01

Your auspicious time to wear it

Wear it for the first time on a Friday, between 6.30 and 7.30 in the morning. Bathe first, place the yantra on your pooja altar and offer your prayers, then wear it around your neck or your waist, on a red or black thread or a silver chain.

02

At a funeral

Take the yantra off before you attend a funeral.

03

Purify the amulet

Whenever the yantra has been taken off, or if it was worn at a funeral, dip it in raw milk or Ganga jal, show it incense, dhoop or attar (perfume), and then wear it again.

04

Keep the energy intact

You may repeat this energising once a week or once a month.

Who is invoked

Matangi

Ninth among the ten Mahavidyas, she is the Devi of Vak — speech that is shaped, ordered and spoken aloud. Tradition paints her the colour of dark emerald, seated on a jewelled throne or beneath a kadamba tree, a parrot near her hand, the veena held against her shoulder, a crescent on her brow. Where Saraswati is the white radiance of learning, Matangi is its darker, denser voice: music, grammar, debate, the word that carries authority. In the Sri Vidya court she is honoured as Raja Matangi, the minister-queen who speaks on behalf of Lalita Tripurasundari and holds the counsel of the kingdom. Students, singers, teachers and those whose work depends on recall and articulate answer turn to her form.

In this homa that grace is invoked through fire, with your own name and birth details spoken in the sankalpa.

Questions

Frequently asked

At home, keep it simple and clean. Bathe, face east or north, light a lamp before her image or yantra, offer dark-green cloth or leaves, jasmine, and cooked food that is freshly made. She is worshipped as ucchishta in some lineages, but a householder need only be sincere and clean. Chant her mula mantra in a steady count, then sit quietly with a book or an instrument. The homa is the fuller form of the same worship, done in fire by trained priests on your behalf.
For marriage, tradition points to Swayamvara Parvathi Homa, Uma Maheswara Homa and Katyayani rites. The Matangi Homa is not a marriage rite — its canonical purpose is learning, speech and focus, which is why AstroBhava lists it under Education. If marriage is your concern, ask us and we will point you to the correct homa in the catalogue.
Matangi is the ninth Mahavidya, dark-emerald in colour, seated on a jewelled throne with a veena in her hands. She is called Shyamala and Raja Matangi, the minister of Lalita Tripurasundari, and she rules speech, music, learning and the inner ordering of thought. Where Saraswati is the pure white current of knowledge, Matangi is knowledge that has become expression — the word that leaves the mouth and lands well.
The Matangi Homa is a Vedic fire ritual in which Devi Matangi is invoked into the consecrated kunda and offered ghee, herbs and grains through her mantra. Its significance lies in her domain: Vak, or articulate speech, and the memory that feeds it. The rite is prescribed for students, scholars, teachers and anyone whose work depends on a clear, retentive and well-spoken mind.
Tradition describes the matangi homa as supporting concentration, retention, clarity of expression and composure in examinations and interviews. The raja matangi homam benefits extend to skill in the arts and to those whose careers turn on communication. As with the tryambakam homa benefits, these are described as the fruits the rite is offered for — the homa is an act of prayer and discipline, not a guarantee of a result.
Students preparing for board exams, entrance tests and competitive papers; research scholars; students of music, languages and performance; and professionals facing interviews or public speaking. Parents commonly book it in a child's name. You do not perform it yourself — qualified priests perform it at our Yagna Ashram in your name and gotra, and you watch the live telecast.
Matangi Jayanti in Vaishakha, the Navaratri nights, Fridays, and days ruled by Hasta or Mula nakshatra are all favoured. Many devotees choose a date a few weeks before an examination season begins. Share your birth details at booking and our panchang team will fix the muhurat and confirm it to you.
The priests begin with achamana, Ganapati puja and a sankalpa spoken with your name, gotra and nakshatra. The kunda is prepared and Agni invoked. Matangi is installed in the fire and in the yantra, and her mula mantra is offered with ghee, samidha of the prescribed wood, honey, sesame, rice and fragrant herbs. Purnahuti closes the offering, followed by deepa aradhana and prayers for the sponsor. The Matangi Yantra is energised in the same fire and dispatched to you.
Book online from any country on this page. Give the name, birth star and gotra of the person the homa is for. We confirm the muhurat, send you the live stream link so you can watch the ritual from wherever you are, and courier the prasadam and the energised Matangi Yantra to your address at no extra cost.
Our silver amulets are specially made for everyday wear: copper is added to the silver to make them more durable. With regular use, the amulet may turn black, reddish or brown as it is exposed to heat and reacts with the chemicals in cosmetics. Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth, keep perfume and cosmetics away from it, and clean it by rubbing it gently with a pinch of vibhuti (sacred ash). Every six months, polish it with cotton dipped in a silver cleaner, but never soak or dip the amulet itself. Never open it, as the energies of the yantra are sealed inside. If it is ever damaged, send it back to us, not to a jeweller.
