The Ritual and Its Weight
The Dasavathara Homa is a Maha homa in which the ten avatars of Vishnu are invoked one after another into a single consecrated fire. Each descent answered a different kind of danger — a flood, a churning, a tyrant, a demon who could be killed neither by day nor night. Tradition therefore turns to the dasavatharam list in order when the trouble at hand has no single face: unexplained obstruction, a household that has grown heavy, the sense of being watched or wished ill.
Because the invocation is sequential, the rite is long and unusually complete. Ten sets of ahutis, ten sankalpas, ten names of refuge — Matsya for what is submerged, Kurma for what must be held steady, Narasimha for what breaks through at the threshold, Kalki for what must be ended. Devotees book it as a protective covering for a home, a family line, a business or a person who has been through a difficult stretch and wants the ground cleared before beginning again.

Not every fire ritual is performed at the same scale. A Maha Homa is our largest form — more priests, a longer fire, and the complete chanting sequence the rite prescribes rather than an abridged one. This is what that means in practice.
A Maha Homa is never a group ceremony, the same as any homa we conduct. What the scale changes is the weight of the offering — ten trained voices holding one hymn for two hours is a different undertaking from one voice for an hour, and it is reserved for the intentions that warrant it.

A covering against evil eye
Ill-wishing looks and words are offered up in the fire with the names of all ten avatars, invoked as a shield around the person named in the sankalpa.

Where black magic, tantric harm or deliberate ill intent is suspected, the rite is performed as a traditional counter-measure and cleansing.
Shielding of the home
The sankalpa is taken for the dwelling and everyone in it, so the protection is asked for the household rather than one individual alone.
Quieting of unseen disturbance
For restless nights, heaviness in rooms, or fear that has no cause you can name, the Narasimha and Varaha invocations are the classical refuge.
Clearing repeated obstruction

Any day of sincere sankalpa is accepted, but the panchang offers moments when the ten-fold invocation is traditionally strongest.

The sealing of the Dasavathara Yantra
The Dasavathara Yantra is consecrated over three days — Jala (holy-water consecration with mantras), Prana (life force through pranayama & chants) and Jeeva Pratishta (awakened with 108 recitations & offerings) — then present through your homa, receiving the energies raised in the fire. When your homa concludes, it is rolled and locked inside its silver amulet according to Agama vidhi — the practice by which those energies are held within a consecrated object rather than dispersing. It is why a homa performed at our ashram can still reach a devotee ten thousand miles away: what the fire raised travels to you, sealed.

How to wear your energised Dasavathara Yantra
Your auspicious time to wear it
Wear it for the first time on a Saturday, between 6.30 and 7.30 in the morning. Bathe first, place the yantra on your pooja altar and offer your prayers, then wear it around your neck or your waist, on a red or black thread or a silver chain.
At a funeral
Take the yantra off before you attend a funeral.
Purify the amulet
Whenever the yantra has been taken off, or if it was worn at a funeral, dip it in raw milk or Ganga jal, show it incense, dhoop or attar (perfume), and then wear it again.
Keep the energy intact
You may repeat this energising once a week or once a month.

Sankalpa
The priest states your name, gotra and nakshatra — and those of up to four family members — with the intention this homa is performed for.
Ganapati Puja
The customary invocation to Ganapati, clearing obstacles before the deity is approached.
Agni Pratishtha
The fire is consecrated in the homa kunda and Agni invoked as the carrier of every offering that follows.
Dasavathara Avahana
The mula mantra of Vishnu's Ten Avatars is chanted, inviting the deity's presence into the fire — by ten priests.
Ahuti
Ghee and akshata, with the flowers, grains and dravyas proper to this deity, are offered in sequence with mantra. Each of the 10 priests makes 1,080 of these offerings with the mula mantras of Vishnu's ten avatars — 10,800 in all.
Purnahuti
The final complete offering seals the sankalpa stated at the opening.

Vishnu's Ten Avatars
Ten descents of Vishnu answer here, each a form the Preserver takes when dharma slips. Matsya the fish draws the Vedas out of the flood. Kurma the tortoise steadies the churning mountain on his back. Varaha the boar lifts the earth from the deep, and Narasimha, man and lion at once, comes at dusk in a doorway, neither day nor night, neither inside nor out. Vamana measures three worlds in three steps. Parashurama carries the axe, Rama the bow, Balarama the plough, Krishna the flute and the counsel of the Gita. Kalki is still awaited, sword raised at the close of the age. The Puranas hold them as one Lord in ten guardings. Devotees turn to the full sequence when danger has no single face and shelter is wanted on every side.
