Ganga Saptami, also called Ganga Jayanti and Jahnu Saptami, is observed on the Saptami tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha. Tradition holds this day as the punah janma — the divine rebirth — of Goddess Ganga on earth, when Sage Jahnu released her after swallowing her waters, and she came to be known as Jahnavi.
In 2026 the festival falls on Thursday, 23 April. Devotees mark it with holy bath, sankalp, worship of Ganga and Shiva, mantra japa, deepdan and daan, whether at a Ganga ghat or at home with Ganga jal. The sections below set out the date and timings, the classical story, the step-by-step vidhi, and how this day differs from Ganga Dussehra.
For the wider festival list and other Vaishakha observances, you can cross-check the festival calendar alongside the tithi details given here.
Ganga Saptami 2026 date and tithi timings
Ganga Saptami 2026 is observed on Thursday, 23 April 2026.
Verified tithi window:
- Saptami tithi begins: 10:49 PM on 22 April 2026
- Saptami tithi ends: 8:49 PM on 23 April 2026
Because the tithi covers the daylight hours of 23 April, the festival is kept on that civil day under the usual udaya-tithi convention. Thursday is Guruvar, the weekday associated with Jupiter; many households therefore treat the coincidence of Saptami with Guruvar as an added reason for japa, study and charity, without treating the weekday as a substitute for the tithi itself.
For city-wise sunrise, rahu kalam and the running tithi on the day, consult the daily panchang. Those planning other undertakings around the same week may also use the muhurat finder.
Madhyahna muhurat for snan, puja and daan
Classical practice favours the Madhyahna (midday) period for Ganga Saptami snan, puja and daan.
Ganga Saptami 2026 Madhyahna muhurat: 11:01 AM to 1:38 PM on 23 April 2026 (about two hours and thirty-seven minutes).
Morning bath and sankalp may begin earlier; the Madhyahna window is the span traditionally preferred for the main offerings. Evening deepdan is kept after dusk, once the daytime rites are complete.
The legend of Jahnu and why the day is called Jahnu Saptami
The Puranic account begins with King Bhagiratha of the Ikshvaku line, who performed long tapas so that Ganga might descend from the heavens and purify the ashes of King Sagara’s sixty thousand sons. Brahma granted the boon. Ganga’s force was such that it threatened the earth; Shiva received her in his jata and released her in a measured flow so that she could course across the land.
While flowing on earth, her waters once swept through the ashram of Sage Jahnu. In anger the sage drank the river entire. The gods and Bhagiratha prayed for her release. Pleased, Jahnu let Ganga issue again from his ear. That release — her second appearance, her punah janma — is placed on Vaishakha Shukla Saptami. From then she is also called Jahnavi, “daughter of Jahnu,” and the tithi is remembered as Ganga Saptami or Jahnu Saptami.
The same stream of narrative links Ganga to Shiva’s jata, which is why Shiva puja stands beside Ganga worship on this day. Houses that keep fire rites for Shiva on sacred tithis often turn to forms such as the Rudra Homa in the broader calendar of observances.

Ganga Saptami puja vidhi — traditional observances
The following sequence reflects common smarta and puranic practice. Adapt it to family custom and capacity.
1. Early rising and intention. Many begin in the brahma muhurta, bathe, and fix a clear sankalp for the welfare of the family and peace of the ancestors.
2. Holy snan. Where the Ganga is reachable — Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Rishikesh and other ghats — a morning dip is the classical observance. Elsewhere, a few drops of Ganga jal mixed into the bath water, with the Ganga mantra, is the accepted home substitute.
3. Sankalp. Facing east, with water and flowers in the hands, state the resolve to keep the vrat and puja on Vaishakha Shukla Saptami.
4. Altar. Place an image of Goddess Ganga, or a kalash of clean water as her emblem, on a clean asana. Offer white flowers, chandan, incense, camphor, fruit and naivedya.
5. Worship of Shiva. Because Ganga is held to flow from Shiva’s locks, water, bilva and white flowers are offered to the Shivalinga. The Mahamrityunjaya mantra is widely recited:
6. Ganga mantra. During snan and puja, chant:
7. Vrat. Some keep nirjala; others keep phalahar (fruit only), according to health. The fast is traditionally broken in the evening after puja.
8. Deepdan. In the evening a lit clay diya is set afloat on a river or, at home, on a vessel of water. The act is linked in custom with prayer for ancestral peace.
9. Daan. Sesame (til), white cloth, food grains, simple copper vessels and Ganga jal are among the gifts traditionally given to the needy and to brahmanas. Giving without bargaining for return is the standard taught in the puranic ethic of this tithi.
Ganga Saptami and Ganga Dussehra — the distinction
The two festivals are often confused because both honour Maa Ganga.
- Ganga Saptami (23 April 2026) marks her rebirth when Sage Jahnu released her — Vaishakha Shukla Saptami. It is her Jayanti in the Jahnavi sense.
- Ganga Dussehra falls on Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami and commemorates her original descent from heaven through Shiva’s jata, the fruit of Bhagiratha’s penance.
Both days support snan, puja and daan; the stories and the tithis are different. Ganga Saptami is specifically the Saptami of rebirth and the name Jahnavi.
Home observance, family custom and traditional significance
Sacred texts and household practice treat sincere home worship as valid when travel to a ghat is not possible. Ganga jal in the bath, a small altar with a kalash, the Ganga and Mrityunjaya mantras, listening to or reading the Bhagiratha–Jahnu katha, and deepdan on a bowl of water cover the essential acts.
Married women commonly pray for the household’s welfare; unmarried devotees and parents pray according to their own sankalp. There is no gender bar on the snan, vrat or mantra. The river is addressed as mother — compassionate and purifying — in the bhakti register of the puranas.
In jyotisha discourse, water rites and ancestral prayer on this tithi are discussed alongside emotional steadiness (Chandra), Guru’s weekday dignity when the festival falls on Thursday, and family concern over pitru-related grief. Tradition prescribes the observances; it does not license medical or guaranteed claims. Devotees who wish to see whether a chart carries Mangal, Kaal Sarp, Pitru or related indications may use a dosha check as a study aid, and those seeking a broader map of shanti and devotion rites can browse the spiritual growth homa catalogue. Guidance on which rite fits a given situation is also available through Ask Nirnaya.
