What the lagna is, and how it moves
The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon. As the Earth turns, all twelve signs rise in turn each day, so the lagna changes about every two hours — faster for some signs and slower for others, and differently in each city. At sunrise the lagna is the Sun’s own sign: the udaya lagna.
Your birth lagna, the ascendant, is the sign that was rising at the moment and place you were born. It is the first house of your horoscope: every house, and so every reading, is counted from it. That is why it needs your birth time; the lagna calculator above finds it.
Choosing a lagna for a beginning
Tradition sorts the twelve lagnas by nature, and fits the nature to the work.
Fixed (sthira)
Vrishabha, Simha, Vrischika, Kumbha. For what should last: a griha pravesh, a marriage, laying a foundation, installing a deity.
Movable (chara)
Mesha, Karka, Tula, Makara. For movement and change: a journey, a vehicle, a new venture that must grow.
Dual (dwiswabhava)
Mithuna, Kanya, Dhanu, Meena. For learning, the arts and agreements, and work that needs both steadiness and change.
The lagna is read together with the day’s tithi and nakshatra, the person’s Tarabalam and Chandrabalam, and no graha badly placed in the lagna or the eighth. Find a muhurat → Tarabalam today →

Lagna
The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at a given moment and place. Your birth lagna — the ascendant — is the first house of your horoscope; the lagna of a moment is what a muhurat is chosen by.
About two hours on average, but not equally: in India the signs from Mesha to Mithuna and from Makara to Meena rise faster, under two hours, and those from Karka to Dhanu slower. The table gives the exact timings for your city.
Udaya lagna is the lagna at sunrise — the sign the Sun itself is in, rising with it. Through the day the lagna moves on through the other signs and returns to the Sun's sign at the next sunrise.
Tradition prefers a fixed lagna — Vrishabha, Simha, Vrischika or Kumbha — for what should last, such as a griha pravesh or a marriage, a movable lagna for a journey, and a dual lagna for learning and the arts; the lagna is then read with the day's tithi, nakshatra and the person's chart.
Because the lagna changes about every two hours, a birth time out by an hour can change it; the place matters too, as the lagna differs between cities at the same clock time.
