Grahan Timing 2026 — Chandra Grahan and Surya Grahan
Every lunar and solar eclipse of 2026, with whether it can be seen from Columbus, Ohio, United States, its local times and the sutak. An eclipse that is below the horizon where you are carries no sutak there.

The sutak begins 9 hours before a lunar eclipse and 12 hours before a solar one, counted from the moment it can be seen where you are, and ends with the eclipse. A penumbral lunar eclipse, where the Moon only dims, is not kept as a grahan and has no sutak. Families and temples differ in how strictly the sutak is kept for children, the elderly and the unwell; follow your own tradition.

Grahan effects on rashi — Surya Grahan, 6 February 2027
The annular solar eclipse falls in Makara rashi. Tradition reads its effect on each Moon sign (janma rashi) by the house it falls in, counted from that sign: the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th are favourable, the 5th and 9th mixed, and the rest a time to take care. It is not seen from Columbus, and tradition gives an eclipse no effect where it is not seen; the readings hold where it is. Find your rashi from your birth details →
| Your rashi | House | Reading | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| MeshaAries | 10th | Favourable | Read as gain and obstacles easing; the eclipse may be watched. |
| VrishabhaTaurus | 9th | Mixed | Keep the sutak and chant; nothing more is advised. |
| MithunaGemini | 8th | Take care | Do not watch the eclipse; chant through it and give daan after. |
| KarkaCancer | 7th | Take care | Do not watch the eclipse; chant through it and give daan after. |
| SimhaLeo | 6th | Favourable | Read as gain and obstacles easing; the eclipse may be watched. |
| KanyaVirgo | 5th | Mixed | Keep the sutak and chant; nothing more is advised. |
| TulaLibra | 4th | Take care | Do not watch the eclipse; chant through it and give daan after. |
| VrischikaScorpio | 3rd | Favourable | Read as gain and obstacles easing; the eclipse may be watched. |
| DhanuSagittarius | 2nd | Take care | Do not watch the eclipse; chant through it and give daan after. |
| MakaraCapricorn | 1st | Take care | Do not watch the eclipse; chant through it and give daan after. |
| KumbhaAquarius | 12th | Take care | Do not watch the eclipse; chant through it and give daan after. |
| MeenaPisces | 11th | Favourable | Read as gain and obstacles easing; the eclipse may be watched. |
Those born in Dhanishta nakshatra, the eclipse’s own star, keep the most care whatever their rashi. A reading by Moon sign is general; your own chart decides more.
Grahan me kya karna chahiye aur kya nahi — what to do and not do during grahan
The grahan rules below are the ones most families and temples keep. They apply only to an eclipse seen where you are; customs differ between regions, so follow your own tradition where it says otherwise.
What to do
- Chant through the eclipse: japa of your deity’s mantra, the Mahamrityunjaya, or the mantras below. Japa done during a grahan is held to bear many times its usual fruit.
- Stay indoors and quiet; read scripture or meditate.
- Put a leaf of tulsi or a blade of darbha grass in stored water, milk and pickles before the sutak begins.
- Watch a solar eclipse only through proper eclipse glasses; never with the bare eye.
What not to do
- Do not cook or eat during the sutak and the eclipse; children, the elderly, the unwell and expectant mothers are exempt.
- Do not begin anything new: no marriage, griha pravesh, purchase or journey.
- Do not sleep through the eclipse unless unwell, and do not touch the deities at home; temples close their doors.
- Do not watch the eclipse if your rashi is in the “take care” rows above.
Sutak rules
The sutak starts 9 hours before a Chandra Grahan and 12 hours before a Surya Grahan, counted from the moment the eclipse is seen in your city, and ends with it; each card above gives the times. During it the fast and the “nothing new” rule apply, while prayer and japa continue.
What to do after the grahan
- Bathe, ideally with the clothes worn during the eclipse, and sprinkle Ganga jal or water through the home and the puja room.
- Cook a fresh meal; cooked food left from before the sutak is given away, not eaten.
- Give grahan daan: after a Chandra Grahan, rice, milk, white cloth or silver; after a Surya Grahan, wheat, jaggery, red cloth or copper — to a temple, a priest or someone in need.
Chandra Grahan mantra and Surya Grahan mantra
The grahan mantra is chanted from the eclipse’s first contact to its end, in any count you can keep.
Chandra Grahan mantra
- Om Chandraya Namah — the Moon’s name mantra
- Chandra Gayatri
- Mahamrityunjaya mantra — for protection
- Ketu mantra
Surya Grahan mantra
- Om Suryaya Namah — the Sun’s name mantra
- Aditya Hridayam
- Mahamrityunjaya mantra
- Rahu mantra
For a dosha the eclipse leaves in a chart, the remedy (upay) the tradition gives is a homa: Chandra Ketu Grahan Dosh Homa after a lunar eclipse, Rahu Ketu Shanti Homa after a solar one.

Grahan Timing and Sutak Time
The next eclipse is the Surya Grahan (annular) on 6 February 2027. None of the eclipses listed here is seen from Columbus, Ohio, United States.
The sutak begins 9 hours before a lunar eclipse and 12 hours before a solar eclipse, counted from the moment the eclipse can be seen where you are, and ends when the eclipse ends. An eclipse that is not seen from your city has no sutak there, and a penumbral lunar eclipse has none at all.
Tradition keeps an expectant mother indoors and away from watching the eclipse, and asks her not to cut, sew or use knives while it lasts. The sutak's fast does not apply to her: she eats and drinks as she needs, and takes her medicines as her doctor advises. Many chant the Mahamrityunjaya mantra quietly through the eclipse.
