Tarabalam chart for every birth star
Choose a birth star to see which of the twenty-seven nakshatras fall in each of its nine taras. Counting from the birth star as one, the nine taras repeat three times round the zodiac — the navtara chakra.
| Tara | Stars for Ashwini | Reading | What tradition reads in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Janma | Ashwini, Magha, Moola | Mixed | Your own star returning: daily work goes on, a new beginning waits. |
| 2. Sampat | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha | Favourable | Wealth and gain: a favourable day to begin. |
| 3. Vipat | Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha | Avoid | Danger and obstacles: avoid new undertakings. |
| 4. Kshema | Rohini, Hasta, Shravana | Favourable | Well-being and safety: favourable. |
| 5. Pratyari | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta | Avoid | Opposition: plans meet resistance. |
| 6. Sadhana | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha | Favourable | Achievement: what is begun is accomplished. |
| 7. Naidhana | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada | Avoid | Loss: the tara most avoided for anything new. |
| 8. Mitra | Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada | Favourable | A friendly star: favourable. |
| 9. Parama Mitra | Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati | Favourable | The most friendly star: very favourable. |
Tarabalam: what to do and what to avoid
What to do
- Check Tarabalam and Chandrabalam before a beginning that matters: a wedding, griha pravesh, a journey, a purchase, a new job or business, the first day of a course of treatment.
- Prefer a day whose star is Sampat, Sadhana or Parama Mitra for you, with the Moon strong.
- For a wedding, check the bride’s and the groom’s stars both, then choose the hour with a muhurat.
- Daily and routine work needs no check.
What to avoid
- Beginning anything new on a Vipat, Pratyari or Naidhana day — Naidhana most of all.
- Beginning anything new on your Chandrashtama days, whatever the tara.
- On your Janma tara, keep to what is already under way; a new venture waits.
When the day cannot move
Tradition answers an unfavourable tara with a small offering made before the work: jaggery on a Vipat day, salt on a Pratyari day, and sesame with a little gold on a Naidhana day — given to a temple or someone in need.
Chandrabalam — the Moon’s strength by house
The reading for each day in your seven days follows the star and the Moon’s sign in force at noon, through the working day; both stars are shown when the star changes.
Count from your birth rashi to the sign the Moon is in, your own rashi being the first. The Moon in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th or 11th gives Chandrabalam; in the 8th it is Chandrashtama, the day tradition avoids for anything new; in the others it is weak.
Using the two together
The muhurta texts weigh Chandrabalam in the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) and Tarabalam in the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha), and hold that a favourable tara can mend a weak Moon. For a beginning that matters — a journey, a purchase, a ceremony — look for both to be favourable, then choose the hour. Find a muhurat →
When the tara is unfavourable and the day cannot move, tradition answers it with the worship of the birth star’s deity. Nakshatra homas →

Tarabalam and Chandrabalam
Tarabalam, the strength of the star, is how the day's nakshatra stands to your birth nakshatra. The nine taras repeat three times round the 27 stars; five of them are favourable, three are not, and the first, your own star returning, is mixed.
Count from your birth star to the day's star, counting your birth star as one, and divide by nine. The remainder is the tara — a remainder of nought is the ninth, Parama Mitra. Born in Ashwini, a Bharani day is the second count: Sampat, favourable.
Chandrabalam, the strength of the Moon, is the house the Moon's sign falls in counted from your birth rashi. The 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th are strong; the 8th is Chandrashtama, the one to avoid.
The muhurta texts weigh Chandrabalam in the bright fortnight and Tarabalam in the dark fortnight, and a good tara is said to mend a weak Moon. For an important beginning, look for both to be favourable.
Find your birth star in the chart: its nine rows name the three stars that fall in each tara for you. When the day's nakshatra is one of the stars in Sampat, Kshema, Sadhana, Mitra or Parama Mitra, the tara is favourable; in Vipat, Pratyari or Naidhana it is not.
Yes: choose the date in the form above and your birth star, and the page reads that day and the six after it. For a wedding, both the bride's and the groom's stars are checked, and the hour is then chosen with a muhurat.
