Navagraha & Planetary Homas

Homas for the grahas whose placement marks a birth chart.

The nine grahas are propitiated one by one, or together, when a chart shows affliction, a heavy dasha, or a transit that the devotee feels in daily life. At the Yagna Ashram each rite is performed with the mantras, samagri and ahuti proper to that planet; the homam is telecast live so she may sit with it from her own home.

Devotees book these for

  • A chart reading that names one graha as weak, combust, or badly placed
  • Entry into Rahu, Ketu, or Shani dasha, or the long stretch of Sade Sati
  • Moon and Ketu sitting together, noted as grahan dosha by the family astrologer
  • Guru joined with Rahu or Ketu, leaving judgement and faith unsteady
  • Mars affliction raised before a marriage alliance or a property matter
  • A Sun or Moon placement tied to the father’s or mother’s wellbeing
  • Several planets flagged at once, with no single graha standing out
  • A desire to propitiate the planet of the current mahadasha before a new undertaking

These four are the easiest to confuse with each other. They are not interchangeable — each addresses a different part of the same difficulty.

Booking more than one is ordinary when several grahas weigh on the same chart. Tradition usually addresses the planet of the current dasha first, or the most heavily afflicted; a Navagraha Homam is often chosen when the reading spans many houses rather than a single graha. Rahu and Ketu are commonly propitiated together in a Rahu-Ketu Shanti Homam instead of as two separate rites, unless the astrologer has named only one node.

Sacred timing

The most auspicious days for planetary rituals

Each graha has weekdays and moments long associated with its own worship.

The weekday of the graha

Sunday for Surya, Monday for Chandra, Tuesday for Angaraka, Wednesday for Budha, Thursday for Brihaspati, Friday for Shukra, and Saturday for Sani. The planet’s own day is the simplest traditional anchor for its homam.

Saturdays

Saturday belongs to Shani. Rites for Saturn, Sade Sati, and related transits are frequently fixed on this day.

Thursdays

Thursday is Brihaspati’s day. Guru Homam and rites touching judgement, learning, and dharmic steadying are often placed then.

Eclipse days

Solar and lunar eclipses are the natural occasion for grahan-dosha shanti, including the Chandra Ketu Grahan Dosh Homam, when the chart shows that yoga.

Amavasya and Purnima

The dark and full moon are used for node-related and Chandra rites when the astrologer prefers a tithi over a weekday.

You need not wait for one of these days. The muhurta for every homam is calculated from the devotee’s own birth chart, so the rite may be fixed on any date the almanac and the chart allow.

Questions

About planetary homas

It is a fire rite addressed to one of the nine grahas, or to several together, using the mantras and offerings proper to that planet. The homam is performed at the ashram for the devotee’s named intention and telecast live to her.
A single-graha homam is the usual choice when the astrologer has named one planet—its dasha, its affliction, or its transit. The Navagraha Homam is booked when several grahas are under pressure at once, or when the reading is of the chart as a whole rather than one house.
Rahu Homam and Ketu Homam each address one node. Rahu-Ketu Shanti Homam propitiates both together and is the form most often used for Rahu-Ketu dosha across the chart. Unless the astrologer has isolated only one node, the combined rite is the customary booking.
Guru Homam is for an afflicted Jupiter in the ordinary sense—wisdom, guidance, learning, marriage prospects, dharmic growth. The Guru Chandal form is specific to charts where Brihaspati sits with Rahu or Ketu; it is not a substitute for a simple Guru affliction without that yoga.
Yes. Planetary homas are fixed from the grahas as they stand in the devotee’s own horoscope—the afflicted planet, the current dasha, or the named dosha. Without the chart the ashram cannot place the rite correctly.
Weekdays and certain tithis are held favourable, yet they are not required. The muhurta is calculated from the birth chart; the rite may be performed on any day the almanac and that chart permit.

Not sure which of these to choose?

If the chart leaves more than one graha in question, the free ritual guide sets each rite in this category beside the others so the distinctions are plain. A live consultation with our pandits can settle the choice before anything is booked.

Why a homam is performed for the grahas that govern a birth chart

In the Vedic reading of a life, the nine grahas are not distant bodies alone; they are the forces whose dignity, aspect, and dasha shape speech, sleep, judgement, marriage, livelihood, and the inner path. When a planet is afflicted—by combustion, enemy placement, harsh aspect, or a difficult period—the tradition turns to homam: fire, mantra, and offering addressed to that graha by name.

A planetary homam is performed for the planet as it stands in that devotee’s chart, not as a general blessing. Budha is invoked for a strained Mercury; Sani for Saturn’s long transit; Rahu and Ketu for the nodes’ particular unease. The Navagraha Homam gathers all nine when the chart as a whole, rather than one house, is under review.

Some yogas call for a combined form rather than a single-planet rite: Guru with Rahu or Ketu in the Guru Chandal Dosha Nivaran Homam; Moon with Ketu in the Chandra Ketu Grahan Dosh Homam; both nodes together in the Rahu-Ketu Shanti Homam. The form follows the yoga the astrologer has named.
