2026 Vaishakha Purnima: Date, Timings, Rituals & Spiritual Significance

Vaishakha Purnima 2026 falls on Friday, 1 May. This guide covers the tithi timings, muhurtas, traditional observances, and why the day is held as Kurma Jayanti and Buddha Purnima.

Vaishakha Purnima is the full-moon day of the lunar month of Vaishakha, the second month of the Hindu calendar year. In the Vedic tradition the month itself is held especially sacred to Lord Vishnu, and the Purnima is treated as the peak of that observance — the tithi on which snan, vrat, dana, Chandra Arghya and Vishnu worship are classically prescribed.

In 2026 the day falls on Friday, 1 May. The same full moon is observed across traditions as Buddha Purnima or Vesak, and in the Vaishnava stream as Kurma Jayanti, the jayanti of Vishnu’s Kurma avatar. Whether you are marking the day from Chennai or New Jersey, the tithi, not the postcode, governs the window of observance.

What follows is the panchang outline for the day, the muhurtas traditionally preferred for each rite, the scriptural and classical basis of the festival, and the practical method of keeping the vrat at home.

What Vaishakha Purnima commemorates

Vaishakha Purnima is the Purnima tithi of the month of Vaishakha. The Skanda Purana and Padma Purana describe Vaishakha as a month in which acts of devotion — river bath, tulsi seva, evening deepa, and recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama — are held to carry heightened spiritual merit. The full moon is treated as the crown of that month.

Three observances converge on the same night. Hindus keep Vaishakha Purnima with Vishnu and Lakshmi worship and with the Satyanarayan Katha. Buddhists mark Vesak as the day associated with the birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha. Vaishnavas also observe Kurma Jayanti, recalling the Kurma avatar who supported Mount Mandara during the Samudra Manthan. Tradition therefore places Vishnu, the moon, and a shared full-moon discipline at the centre of the day.

For the jayanti strand in particular, the house’s Kurma Homa is performed in the classical fire-ritual form when a devotee wishes the avatar remembered through homa rather than only through home puja.

Vaishakha Purnima 2026 date and tithi timings

Panchang practice follows the Udaya Tithi rule: the tithi current at sunrise is the tithi of the civil day. On that basis, Friday, 1 May 2026 is the day of observance.

  • Date of observation: Friday, 1 May 2026
  • Purnima tithi begins: Thursday, 30 April 2026, 9:12 PM IST
  • Purnima tithi ends: Friday, 1 May 2026, 10:52 PM IST
  • Sunrise (1 May, New Delhi reference): 5:41 AM IST
  • Sunset: 6:03 PM IST
  • Moonrise: 5:55 PM IST

The tithi is active through the daylight hours of 1 May and continues past moonrise, so vrat, snan, Satyanarayan Katha, Chandra Puja and dana are all aligned to that civil day. Devotees outside India convert these IST marks to local clock time; the tithi itself does not change with the time zone. Auspicious muhurtas on 1 May 2026

Classical manuals assign different windows of the Purnima day to different acts — bath and japa at dawn, Vishnu puja near midday, and Chandra Arghya after moonrise. The outline below is for the New Delhi reference used with the tithi above; local sunrise and moonrise shift the clock slightly.

WindowIST timingTraditional use
Brahma Muhurta3:36 AM – 4:20 AMSnan, dhyana, first japa
Abhijit Muhurta11:52 AM – 12:45 PMVishnu Puja, Satyanarayan Katha
Pradosh / twilightFrom about 6:56 PMLakshmi–Vishnu evening worship
Amrit Kalam6:56 PM – 8:41 PMChandra Arghya, mantra japa
Vrat paranAfter Chandra Darshan (moonrise 5:55 PM)Breaking the fast once the moon is visible

On this date Swati nakshatra runs from sunrise through the small hours of 2 May, and Siddhi Yoga is current from dawn until about 9:13 PM — a combination the panchang tradition treats as favourable for japa, tapa and dhyana. For a named undertaking on another day, the muhurat finder lists the open windows by purpose.

Spiritual significance in the Vedic tradition

In the Vedic view a Purnima is not only an astronomical full moon. Lunar light is at its height; the mind and the emotional field are held to be more receptive, and mantras and vows taken on the tithi are given special weight. Vaishakha adds the month’s dedication to Vishnu, the sustainer of dharma. Ordinary acts — a clean bath, a lamp at dusk, water to tulsi, a measured gift of food or cloth — are therefore placed on a larger ledger of merit than on an ordinary day.

The 2026 alignment carries three further classical notes. It is Kurma Jayanti; it coincides with Vesak; and the civil day is a Friday, the weekday associated with Shukra and with Lakshmi worship. Tradition therefore pairs Vishnu and Lakshmi on the same altar more readily than on a midweek Purnima. None of this is a promise of a particular worldly result; it is the reason the day is chosen for snan, vrat, katha and dana.

Three streams — Vishnu’s Purnima, Kurma Jayanti and Vesak — meet on one full-moon night.

Homas offered for devotion and steady sadhana on such tithis are grouped under the house’s spiritual growth catalogue when a fire ritual is preferred to a simple home puja.

Rituals prescribed for the day

Purnima snan. Rise in Brahma Muhurta if possible. A river or sea bath is classical; at home, a clean bath with a few drops of Ganga jal, a pinch of turmeric and sesame, taken with the remembrance Om Namo Narayanaya, is the usual substitute.

Purnima vrat. The strict form is nirjala from sunrise to moonrise. A phalahar discipline — fruit, milk, nuts and other sattvic food — is widely accepted, especially where health requires it. The fast is broken only after Chandra Darshan and Arghya, and before the tithi ends.

Satyanarayan Puja and Katha. The Skanda Purana associates the Satyanarayan form of Vishnu with Purnima observance. The katha is read with panchamrit, panchmeva and prasad; Abhijit Muhurta is the preferred slot for the reading on this date. Families mark house-warmings, new work and anniversaries on this tithi for that reason.

Vishnu–Lakshmi worship. Offer tulsi, white or yellow flowers, milk or panchamrit, and a ghee lamp. Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama, or chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times. Because the civil day is a Friday, Lakshmi is often invoked beside Vishnu rather than alone.

Chandra Puja and Arghya. After moonrise, face the moon with a copper vessel of water, milk and akshat. Offer the water with Om Som Somaya Namah. Amrit Kalam is the window classically preferred for this act and for quiet moon-gazing. Where a chart shows a weak or afflicted Moon, tradition prescribes regular Purnima Arghya and Chandra japa as a lunar shanti discipline; a birth chart can be drawn free with the kundli tool before any such decision.

Dana. Smriti texts give dana on Vaishakha Purnima a high place. Water-pots, sattu, milk, white cloth, cooked food, oil or ghee for lamps, and support to scholars and temples are the gifts named most often. Abroad, temple support, a sponsored rite, or feeding the needy in one’s own city are treated as the same discipline.

From the ashram: Complete the evening Arghya and paran while the Purnima tithi is still current; do not wait until after 10:52 PM IST on 1 May 2026.

Mantras, conduct and what to avoid

Mantra is the thread that holds the day’s acts together. Sit facing east or north, after a bath, in clean white or yellow cloth, and use a tulsi or crystal mala for a full 108 if that is your practice.

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya — the twelve-syllable mantra of Vishnu

Other mantras kept on this Purnima include Om Namo Narayanaya, Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namaha for Lakshmi, and Om Som Somaya Namah or Om Chandraya Namah for Chandra. Guidance on pace, breath and mala count is set out in the house note on how to chant a mantra.

What the day asks you to set aside is as clear as what it asks you to do. Keep the kitchen free of non-vegetarian food, onion, garlic and intoxicants. Avoid harsh speech, idle conflict, cutting hair or nails, and the purchase of sharp objects. Do not neglect elders or the poor. If the vrat is strict, daytime sleep is traditionally avoided so that the tapas of the fast is not diluted.

Questions devotees ask

Vaishakha Purnima is observed on Friday, 1 May 2026. The Purnima tithi begins at 9:12 PM IST on 30 April and ends at 10:52 PM IST on 1 May. Under the Udaya Tithi rule, the civil day of observance is 1 May.
They fall on the same full moon. Buddhists keep the day as Vesak or Buddha Purnima, linked with the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and Mahaparinirvana. Hindus keep it as Vaishakha Purnima and, in the Vaishnava tradition, as Kurma Jayanti.
Abhijit Muhurta, about 11:52 AM to 12:45 PM IST, is preferred for Satyanarayan Katha and Vishnu Puja. Moonrise is at 5:55 PM IST; Arghya is offered once the moon is clearly visible, with Amrit Kalam (6:56 PM – 8:41 PM IST) held as the strongest evening window. Convert IST to your local zone if you are abroad.
Break the vrat only after Chandra Darshan and Arghya — after the risen moon has been seen and water offered. Prasad such as kheer, fruit and other sattvic food is then taken. Finish the evening rites before the tithi ends at 10:52 PM IST.
Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi are primary; Satyanarayan, a form of Vishnu, is worshipped through the Purnima katha. Chandra is honoured at moonrise. On this date the jayanti of the Kurma avatar is also remembered, which is why some households add a Kurma-oriented remembrance or homa.
