Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami 2026: Date, Puja Vidhi and Benefits

In 2026, the monthly Krishna Ashtami vrat falls inside Adhik Jyeshtha Maas. Here is the date, the Nishita Kaal window, the classical puja vidhi, and what the Puranas say about observing it in Purushottam Maas.

Masik Krishna Janmashtami is the monthly vrat kept on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in honour of Lord Krishna. In most years it is a quiet, recurring observance. In 2026 it falls inside Adhik Jyeshtha Maas — the intercalary month also called Purushottam Maas — and is therefore known as Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami.

The Hindu lunisolar calendar inserts this extra month roughly once every two to three years so that the lunar year stays aligned with the solar year. Scripture treats the whole of Adhik Maas as a purely spiritual window. A Janmashtami vrat kept inside it is, in the classical view, not an ordinary monthly fast.

This article sets out the 2026 date and tithi timings, the reason Adhik Maas is held sacred, a practical puja vidhi from morning through Nishita Kaal, the mantras traditionally used, and the distinctions between this observance and a regular Masik Janmashtami.

What is Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami?

Masik Krishna Janmashtami — also called Masik Krishnashtami or Masik Janmashtami — is observed every lunar month on the eighth tithi of the dark fortnight. Devotees keep a fast, offer tulsi and makhan-mishri, and remember Krishna’s birth at midnight.

When that same Ashtami falls inside Adhik Maas (Mal Maas / Purushottam Maas), the day is named Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami. It is not a separate festival invented for the calendar; it is the familiar monthly vrat placed inside the intercalary month that the Puranas assign to Lord Vishnu as Purushottama.

In 2026, Adhik Maas runs through Jyeshtha and is therefore called Adhik Jyeshtha Maas. The Masik Ashtami that occurs within those dates is the Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami of the year. For the wider festival map of the year, the festival calendar lists the principal Krishna and Vishnu observances month by month.

Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami 2026: date and tithi

The observance spans the night of Sunday, 7 June into Monday, 8 June 2026, with the main midnight puja falling on the night of 7–8 June.

  • Ashtami tithi begins: 3:24 AM on 8 June 2026 (IST)
  • Ashtami tithi ends: 3:23 AM on 9 June 2026 (IST)
  • Nishita Kaal (midnight puja window): approximately 12:00 AM – 12:40 AM on 8 June 2026 (IST)

Nishita Kaal is the traditional hour of Krishna’s birth and is treated as the heart of the vidhi. Devotees who cannot keep a full-day fast still aim to complete abhishek, arati and nama-japa inside this short window.

The timings above follow Indian Standard Time. Readers outside India should convert the tithi and the local midnight of their own city rather than clock-watching IST. The free daily panchang gives tithi, nakshatra and day’s muhurta for the reader’s location and is the practical way to fix the local Nishita window.

From the ashram: If the Ashtami tithi is running at your local midnight, perform the birth-puja then; if the tithi has already ended or has not yet begun, follow the prevailing local panchang rather than forcing the IST clock.

Why Adhik Maas magnifies this Janmashtami

A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year. To keep the months in step with the seasons, the traditional calendar adds an extra month after roughly thirty-two or thirty-three ordinary months. That extra month has no solar sankranti of its own; no graha-sankramana marks it. Classical writers therefore call it free of ordinary worldly muhurta and set it aside for vrata, japa, homam and dana.

The Padma Purana and Skanda Purana narrate that Adhik Maas, once without a presiding deity, was accepted by Vishnu as Purushottama. From then on the month is known as Purushottam Maas, and acts of devotion performed in it are described as carrying the combined weight of the twelve ordinary months. That is the scriptural frame in which Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami is read: a Krishna Ashtami kept inside Vishnu’s own intercalary month.

Adhik Jyeshtha Maas in 2026 is given as running from 17 May to 15 June. The next Adhik Maas is not expected until around 2029, so this particular alignment of monthly Krishnashtami with Purushottam Maas is uncommon in the near calendar. Tradition therefore treats the day as worth a full Shodashopachara puja, night vigil and, where a family wishes, a dedicated Krishna homam such as the Rajagopala Homam performed with name and gotra sankalpa.

Puja vidhi: morning, evening and Nishita Kaal

The vidhi below follows the common Smarta and Vaishnava household pattern for Masik Krishnashtami, expanded slightly for the Adhik Maas setting. Adjust details to your family sampradaya.

Morning (sunrise, 7 June)

  • Snanam: Bathe before sunrise. Where Ganga water is not available, add tulsi leaves to the bath water or recite a short Ganga stotra.
  • Sankalpa: Facing east before the murti or picture of Bal Krishna, state name, gotra, tithi and the resolve to keep Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami for the pleasure of Shri Krishna and the welfare of the household.
  • Alankara: Clean the murti, place it in a small jhula if you use one, dress it in yellow cloth, apply chandan, and garland with tulsi and marigold.
  • Deepa: Light a ghee lamp to burn through the day and night of the vrat.

Evening (sunset)

  • Shodashopachara: Offer the sixteen upacharas — avahana, asana, padya, arghya, achamana, madhuparka, snana with panchamrita, vastra, yajnopavita, gandha, pushpa (kadamba, jasmine, tulsi), dhupa, deepa, naivedya, tambula, and pradakshina-namaskara.
  • Tulsi archana: Offer 108 tulsi leaves with the Ashtottara shatanamavali of Krishna.
  • Bhog: Makhan-mishri (fresh white butter with mishri) is the classic Janmashtami naivedya; panchamrita, fruits and a simple kheer may accompany it. Tulsi must go with every offering.

Midnight — Nishita Kaal

  • Perform a fresh abhishek of Bal Krishna with panchamrita and pure water at local midnight.
  • Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times.
  • Blow the shankha, gently rock the jhula, and sing a simple cradle song or ashtapadi.
  • Read at least one chapter of the Bhagavad Gita or a passage from the Srimad Bhagavatam.
  • Keep jagaran with bhajan; sleep is traditionally deferred until after the birth-puja.

Dawn (8 June)

Offer a final arati with a five-wick lamp and camphor. Distribute panchamrita, makhan-mishri and fruit as prasad, and break the fast with that prasad.

Nishita Kaal is the still point of the whole vrat — even a short, sincere midnight puja is the classical core of Janmashtami.

Mantras traditionally used on the day

Japa done in Adhik Maas is described in the Puranas as carrying compounded merit. The mantras below are the ones most often prescribed for Krishnashtami; pronounce them clearly and keep a steady count. Guidance on pace and breath is set out in the house note on how to chant a mantra correctly.

हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे । हरे राम हरे राम राम राम हरे हरे ॥
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare — the Maha Mantra
ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय
Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya — the Ashtakshara mantra of Vasudeva

Other forms in common use include the Gopala mantra Om Klim Krishnaya Govindaya Gopijana Vallabhaya Svaha and a full or partial recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama. Choose one primary mantra for the day’s japa rather than scattering attention across many.

Households that cannot manage the full sequence still keep sankalpa, a partial phalahar fast, tulsi archana and the midnight remembrance. The spiritual-growth homam catalogue groups Krishna and Vishnu fire-rites for families who prefer the observance to be completed at the ashram with live telecast.

Dos, don’ts and what tradition associates with the vrat

Dos. Keep body, speech and mind clean through the day. Fast according to capacity — complete upavasa or phalahar with fruit and milk. Recite Gita or Bhagavata passages. Complete the midnight abhishek and, if strength allows, the night vigil. Offer dana of food or cloth; charity in Adhik Maas is specially recommended in the Puranas. Repeat Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya as often as the day permits.

Don’ts. Avoid grains, onion, garlic and meat while the vrat is on. Do not sleep through the Nishita window. Refrain from harsh speech and from purely commercial amusement during the fast. Do not omit the sankalpa; it orients the rite.

On benefits, popular and Puranic lists link the Krishnashtami vrat with the dissolving of accumulated papa, household protection under Krishna as Gopala or Rajagopala, the hearing of heartfelt wishes, ease for pitru-related concerns, and progress on the bhakti path. The Padma, Vishnu and Skanda Puranas praise the vrat in these terms, and they further magnify any vrat kept in Purushottam Maas. AstroBhava states only what tradition prescribes and what the house performs. The rite is offered as devotion, not as a transaction that compels a particular worldly result.

Questions devotees ask

It falls across Sunday, 7 June and Monday, 8 June 2026. Ashtami tithi runs from 3:24 AM on 8 June to 3:23 AM on 9 June (IST). The classical Nishita Kaal puja window is about 12:00 AM to 12:40 AM on 8 June IST; convert to your own local midnight with a city panchang.
Regular Masik Krishnashtami comes every lunar month. Adhik Masik Krishna Janmashtami is the same Ashtami vrat when it lands inside Adhik Maas (Purushottam Maas), which appears only once in roughly two to three years. The Puranas describe devotion in that intercalary month as carrying the combined merit of the twelve ordinary months.
Upavasa is the central limb of the vrat. When a full fast is not possible for health reasons, a phalahar fast of fruit and milk is the accepted alternative. Sankalpa, tulsi offering, midnight remembrance of Krishna and nama-japa remain the core even when the fast is partial.
Yes. A clean altar with a Bal Krishna murti or picture, tulsi, a ghee lamp and sincere sankalpa are enough. Use local midnight for Nishita Kaal, not the IST clock. Families who want the fire-rite done with full Vedic procedure may have Rajagopala Homam performed at the ashram in their name and gotra and watch it by live telecast.
The Ashtakshara Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra are the most widely used. The Gopala mantra and Vishnu Sahasranama are also traditional. Pick one primary japa for the day and keep the count steady rather than mixing many formulas.
