Mithuna Sankranti 2026: Date, Punya Kaal Timings & Rituals

Mithuna Sankranti 2026 falls on Monday, 15 June, when Surya enters Mithuna Rashi. Here are the verified moment, Punya Kaal windows, and the traditional observances prescribed for the day.

Mithuna Sankranti is one of the twelve solar Sankrantis of the Vedic year. It marks the precise moment when Surya leaves Vrishabha Rashi (Taurus) and enters Mithuna Rashi (Gemini), the sign ruled by Budha. With that crossing, the third solar month of the Hindu calendar begins, and the quality of solar energy shifts from the steady, earth-bound character of Taurus into the swift, communicative field associated with Mercury.

The Surya Siddhanta and the Vishnu Purana treat every Sankranti as a complete transition of the Sun from one rashi to the next. Ritual timing, snana, arghya, dana and homam are all calculated from that single moment. For Mithuna Sankranti 2026 the date, the Sankranti moment, the Punya Kaal, and the classical forms of observance are set out below so that devotees in India and abroad can keep the day with clarity.

You can follow the Sun’s ingresses through the year on the free Sankranti transit calendar, and check the day’s tithi and nakshatra on the daily panchang.

What is Mithuna Sankranti?

The word Sankranti comes from Sanskrit sam (complete) and kranti (crossing): a full passage of the Sun from one zodiac sign into another. There are twelve such crossings in a solar year. Each governs a distinct solar month, carries its own ritual prescriptions in the Dharmashastra, and is associated with particular forms of dana.

Mithuna Sankranti specifically governs the period that begins when Surya enters Mithuna Rashi. Because Gemini is traditionally regarded as a friendly sign for the Sun, classical texts link this transit with the domains Surya rules—authority, vitality, father–son bonds, career standing, and clarity of mind—now coloured by Mercury’s communicative and intellectual quality.

According to the panchang system, the Sankranti moment itself is the pivot. The sixteen ghatis that follow it constitute the Punya Kaal for Mithuna Sankranti—the window within which snana, arghya, dana and homam are prescribed for the day’s merit.

Mithuna Sankranti 2026: Date, Moment and Panchang

Mithuna Sankranti 2026 falls on Monday, 15 June 2026. The Sankranti moment—Surya’s exact entry into Mithuna Rashi—occurs at 12:59 PM IST.

The tithi on this day is Shukla Prathama, the first day of the waxing fortnight. The weekday is Somavar, sacred to Chandra and to Lord Shiva. The Sankranti nakshatra is Mrigashira (also called Maitra), described in classical jyotisha as mridu—gentle, inquiring and benevolent—which tradition treats as favourable for charity and for beginning soft, devotional practices. The karana is Kinstughna; the vahana associated with this Sankranti in the older lists is the murga (rooster), a symbol of vigilance in the hours after the transit.

Punya Kaal Timings for Mithuna Sankranti 2026

The Punya Kaal begins at the Sankranti moment and runs for sixteen ghatis—about six hours and twenty-four minutes. The Dharmashastra places snana, arghya, dana and homam inside this window.

India (IST, UTC+5:30)12:59 PM – approx. 7:23 PM, 15 June

Devotees in the Americas, where the window opens before dawn, traditionally complete bath, lamp-lighting and east-facing arghya early, so the household is ready when the Punya Kaal is live. Major new undertakings are often deferred until after the window closes, because Sankranti itself is treated as sandhikala—a junction rather than a starting point.

Spiritual Significance in the Tradition

Every Sankranti is described as a cosmic watershed: the force of Surya’s annual path concentrates at a single transitional point. The Vishnu Purana states that actions performed at Sankranti carry multiplied punya—dana given then is counted as far greater than ordinary charity, and homam offered then is received as addressed directly to Surya.

Mithuna Sankranti 2026 carries three classical markers of note. First, the Sun enters a Mercury-ruled sign, so texts emphasise clarity of speech, resolution of misunderstanding, and intellectual steadiness. Second, the transit falls on Somavar, bringing a confluence of Surya and Chandra associations and making both Surya-upasana and simple Shiva remembrance natural on the same day. Third, Mrigashira’s gentle character is held to favour healing rites, new spiritual beginnings, and charity offered with compassion rather than display.

Sankranti is sandhikala: the merit lies in what is offered at the crossing, not in forcing a new beginning into the junction itself.

Traditional phalam lists for a friendly-sign solar ingress speak of general well-being, steadier public affairs, and a productive agricultural season—read as omens of Surya’s placement, not as personal guarantees.

Puja Vidhi and Home Observance

The following vidhi is the standard Sankranti sequence for temple and home. A clean east-facing space, a ghee or sesame-oil lamp, a copper vessel, and red or seasonal flowers are sufficient.

1. Pratah snana. Rise before sunrise. Bathe in clean water; a pinch of til (sesame) in the water is traditional for all Sankrantis. Chant Om Suryaya Namah twenty-one times while bathing.

2. Kalasha sthapana. Fill a copper or brass vessel with clean water, set a coconut on top, and place it on a red cloth at the altar facing east—the kalasha stands for Surya’s presence in the house.

3. Surya arghya. At an east-facing window or outdoors, pour a thin stream of water from the copper vessel toward the rising Sun. Add red flowers and a few grains of raw rice if available. Offer three rounds while reciting:

ॐ सूर्याय नमः । ॐ आदित्याय नमः । ॐ भास्कराय नमः ।
Om Suryaya Namah · Om Adityaya Namah · Om Bhaskaraya Namah — salutations to Surya, Aditya and Bhaskara

4. Aditya Hridayam parayanam. Recite the full Aditya Hridayam (thirty-one shlokas from the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana). On a day when the Sun enters a sign of speech and intellect, this stotra is held especially fitting.

5. Japa. Follow with 108 repetitions of the Surya Gayatri, or one round of the twelve Aditya names (Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Khaga, Pushan, Hiranyagarbha, Marichi, Aditya, Savita, Arka, Bhaskara).

ॐ भास्कराय विद्महे दिवाकराय धीमहि । तन्नः सूर्यः प्रचोदयात् ॥
Om Bhaskaraya vidmahe Divakaraya dhimahi · tanno Suryah prachodayat — Surya Gayatri

6. Naivedya. Offer cooked wheat or a wheat-based prasad, jaggery (gud), and fresh fruit. Red flowers, red cloth and copper remain the preferred colours and metals for Surya.

7. Dana. After puja, give according to means. Wheat, jaggery, til, copper vessels, red cloth, umbrellas and water-pots are the items specifically named for Mithuna Sankranti. Feeding brahmins, the elderly or the poor during the Punya Kaal completes the observance. Devotees abroad may fulfil dana through a local temple, a food charity offered in Surya’s name, or by dedicating a rite performed with their sankalpa.

From the ashram: Sesame (til) is the central dravya of this Sankranti—used in bath water, food, homam and charity—because of its long association with Surya and its cooling character at the height of summer.

Homam, Fasting and the Day’s Discipline

Among Surya rites, the Aditya Hridaya Homam is the fire offering built on the same Ramayana hymn. Tradition places it among the principal observances when the Sun is at a Sankranti peak. It is performed with Ganapati puja, kalasha sthapana, Navagraha puja, Surya avahana, the thirty-one verses, purnahuti and arghya. Related planetary fire rites are gathered under the planetary homam catalogue for those whose sankalpa is framed by graha placement rather than by the festival alone.

Full nirjala fasting is not mandatory on Mithuna Sankranti as it is on Ekadashi. The Dharmasindhu and Nirnaya Sindhu recommend a partial upavasa: no non-vegetarian food, alcohol or tamasic items; the main meal only after puja, arghya and dana; sattvic fare of wheat preparations, fruit, milk and ghee; and, for those able, a lighter or phalahari discipline through the Punya Kaal itself.

Practical notes for the day, whether you are in Chennai or New Jersey: keep a copper vessel and something red at the altar; face east for arghya and Gayatri; wear red or orange as a simple bodily sankalpa; and avoid scheduling confrontations or long travel that must begin exactly at the Sankranti moment. The junction is for offering, not for forcing a start.

Questions devotees ask

Mithuna Sankranti 2026 falls on Monday, 15 June 2026. The Sankranti moment—when Surya precisely enters Mithuna Rashi—is 12:59 PM IST. The day’s tithi is Shukla Prathama and the Sankranti nakshatra is Mrigashira.
The Punya Kaal begins at the Sankranti moment and lasts sixteen ghatis, roughly until 7:23 PM IST. In US Eastern Time that corresponds to about 3:29 AM to 9:53 AM on 15 June. Snana, arghya, dana and homam are prescribed inside this window.
Surya Dev is the primary deity of every Sankranti. On Mithuna Sankranti the principal recitations are the Aditya Hridayam, the Surya Gayatri, and the twelve Aditya names (Surya Dwadasha Nama). The beeja mantra Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah is also widely used after arghya.
The Dharmashastra names wheat, jaggery, sesame (til), copper vessels, red cloth, umbrellas and water-pots. These are given to brahmins, the elderly or the poor during the Punya Kaal. Devotees living abroad may offer the same items through a local temple or food charity in Surya’s name.
Full fasting is not compulsory; partial upavasa after the pattern of the Nirnaya Sindhu is recommended. The Punya Kaal can be observed in any timezone by converting from the IST moment. Arghya, Gayatri and dana at the corresponding local hours keep the observance intact wherever the devotee lives.
