Swati Nakshatra, also written Swathi and known in Tamil as Swathi Natchathiram, is the fifteenth of the twenty-seven nakshatras, the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. It lies wholly within Tula rashi (Libra), from 6°40′ to 20°00′. Its ruling planet, the Swati Nakshatra lord, is Rahu, and its presiding deity is Vayu, the god of wind and of the breath that moves in every living thing. Its symbol is a young shoot swaying in the wind: a plant that bends with every gust and does not break.
This guide sets out what the tradition says about Swati: its lord and deity, its four padas and their name syllables, the characteristics it gives, how it fares in marriage matching, and how to find the Swati day each month.

Swati Nakshatra lord, deity and symbol
Vayu, the deity. Vayu is the wind and the vital breath, prana. He moves everywhere, carries everything and is held by nothing, and the tradition reads the same quality into Swati: independence, movement and the ability to adapt. The shoot in the wind is Vayu's image for this nakshatra. It yields to pressure without losing its root, and stands again when the wind has passed.
Rahu, the lord. Rahu, the north node of the Moon, rules Swati. In Vedic astrology Rahu stands for ambition, the foreign and the unconventional, and for appetite that reaches past the familiar. Under Swati, that restlessness is turned towards exchange, travel and self-made enterprise. When Rahu's dasha, bhukti or transit becomes active in a Swati native's chart, the tradition treats it as a period to watch, because the nakshatra's own lord is then in charge.
Shukra, the sign lord. Because Swati falls entirely in Tula, every Swati native's Moon is in a sign ruled by Shukra (Venus): the planet of harmony, beauty, agreements and fair balance. Tula is the scales, and the sign's concern with balance colours how Swati's independence is expressed.

The four padas of Swati Nakshatra
Each nakshatra is divided into four quarters, or padas, of 3°20′. Each pada falls in a different navamsa, the ninth-division chart, and carries its own syllable, which is traditionally used for the first letter of a child's name.
| Pada | Span in Tula | Navamsa | Name syllable |
|---|---|---|---|

Your pada is fixed by the Moon's exact degree at birth, which our free Nakshatra Finder works out from your date, time and place of birth.
Swati Nakshatra characteristics
The classical description is short. The Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira says one born in Swati is self-controlled, skilled in trade, compassionate, sweet in speech and devoted to dharma. The commentators build on those five qualities, and on Vayu and the swaying shoot, to describe the Swati temperament:
- Independent. Swati natives are said to prize their freedom and to do best when they can set their own course.
- Adaptable. Like the shoot in the wind, they bend to circumstances without breaking, and recover well from setbacks.
- Gentle and courteous in speech. The "sweet speech" of the classical line, and Tula's concern for balance, make them diplomatic and considerate company.
- Fair in dealing. The tradition associates Swati with honest exchange and with a sense of justice.
- Restless. The same wind that gives freedom can make them unsettled, quick to change plans and reluctant to be tied down. The tradition counts patience and steadiness as the qualities Swati natives must cultivate.
Swati Nakshatra male and female natives. The tradition gives the same core picture for both. Men born under Swati are described as independent, enterprising and generous, and drawn to work that lets them travel or trade. Women born under Swati are described as gracious, self-reliant and fair-minded, with an independent spirit and a strong sense of right and wrong. These are traditional descriptions of the nakshatra, not a reading of any one person: the whole birth chart, and especially the Moon's sign, house and aspects, decides how they show in a life.
Career and money
"Skilled in trade" is the oldest line about Swati, and the tradition has always linked the nakshatra with commerce: business, buying and selling, negotiation and law, diplomacy and public relations. Vayu's movement adds travel, transport, aviation and work that crosses borders, and Rahu adds technology and the new. The tradition holds that Swati natives often prosper on their own terms, in independent work or their own enterprise, rather than under close control.
Swati Nakshatra in marriage and matching
In kundli matching (the Ashtakoota or porutham system), the bride's and groom's birth stars are compared on several points. For Swati the three that matter most are:
- Gana: Deva. Swati is of the divine temperament. A Deva–Deva or Deva–Manushya pairing is counted favourable; Deva–Rakshasa scores lowest.
- Nadi: Antya. Swati belongs to the Antya nadi, with Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana and Revati. When both partners share the same nadi, the tradition counts it as Nadi Dosha, the most serious single objection in matching, unless a recognised cancellation applies.
- Yoni: Mahisha (buffalo). The yoni compares instinctive and physical compatibility. Swati's partner star in the buffalo yoni is Hasta.
No single factor decides a match. Our free Kundli Matching tool scores all the factors from both birth details and shows where each point is gained or lost.
When is Swati Nakshatra?
The Moon passes through Swati once in every lunar cycle, about every twenty-seven days, and stays for about a day. The exact times it enters and leaves Swati change from month to month and from place to place, so the date is best read for your own city. Our daily panchang shows the nakshatra for any date and location, with the time it begins and ends.
In the Tamil and Kerala tradition, the star of a day is the nakshatra in force at sunrise. When the Moon is in Swati at sunrise, that day is kept as the Swati star day, the day a Swati native's birth-star observances are made.
Because every Swati native has the Moon in Tula, the days to be careful are the Tula chandrashtama days, when the Moon passes through Meena, the eighth sign from Tula. They are listed on our Tula chandrashtama page, and the year ahead for the sign is on the Tula yearly horoscope.
What Swati natives traditionally do on their star day
The tradition keeps the Swati star day, and above all the Swati day in the lunar month of one's birth, the nakshatra birthday, for worship of Vayu. Devotees chant Vayu's mantra, Om Vayave Namah, which is set out in full with its meaning and method in our Swati Nakshatra mantra guide. Many light a lamp and pray, give to those in need, and keep the day free of quarrels. Some families also have a Swati Nakshatra Homam performed: the fire rite in which priests offer to Vayu in the native's name, traditionally chosen on the star day, before a journey or a new venture, or when Rahu's dasha or transit becomes active.
