What the Mariamman Thalattu is
The Mariamman Thalattu is a Tamil folk lullaby sung not to a child but to the goddess Mariamman, the village Mother of rain and of the pox whose great shrine stands at Samayapuram near Tiruchirappalli. No author is known; the text was handed down orally and reached print only in the early twentieth century. Its roughly 790 lines run in couplets of spoken, colloquial Tamil rather than learned verse. A Kappu verse asks Ganapati to guard the singer, five stanzas lead Vinayaka ahead, and three ask Saraswati for a voice that will not falter. The long body then names her shrines from Samayapuram to Padavedu and Periyapalayam, pleads with her to bring the 'pearls' down from head to feet, scolds her stony heart, calls her guardian deities to court and ends in vazhi blessings and a Mangalam couplet.
A song to cool a goddess in fever
In Tamil villages the eruptions of smallpox and chickenpox were called muthu, pearls, and the sickness itself was spoken of as the Mother's presence in the body. Tradition holds that Mariamman did not welcome medicine in such a house; the family instead kept neem leaves close and sang to her, beating a small hand drum fast and steadily. That is the setting of this lullaby. Its singer calls the goddess down from each of her seats, asks her to come down the body joint by joint until the pearls touch the ground, and argues with her as a child argues with a mother: is her heart stone, is it iron, will the people of the Kali age laugh at her devotee. Many of the places it names are real temples. Kannanur is the name of the first Samayapuram shrine, where, according to local tradition, an image put out of the Srirangam temple was found by passersby and housed in a new shrine. Padavedu, which the song links to the mother of Parashurama, carries the widely told identification of Mariamman with Renuka. References to Marathas, Pathans, the Carnatic army and, late in the text, a clarinet band show that singers kept adding to the song over generations.

Auspiciousness, auspiciousness to the story of Mariamman; may auspiciousness be to Ishvari who fills all things.
The syllable people get wrong
In மாரியம்மன் (māriyammaṉ) the first syllable is a long mā, the doubled mm is held for a beat, and the name ends in the alveolar ṉ, so it is 'MAA-ri-yam-man', not a quick 'Mary-amman'.
When the Mariamman Thalattu is chanted
Weekday. Friday
Festival. Aadi month festivals of Mariamman
Questions
Have your chart read before you decide
Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
- Over 30 years in the Guru–Sishya Parampara, from the age of five
- He reads every chart himself — 60 minutes, one to one, never delegated
- Charts are read only between sunrise and sunset, following tradition
