What is Kuja Dosha?

In Vedic astrology, Kuja Dosha is defined by the placement of Mars in six specific bhavas: the 1st (Lagna), 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. These houses govern the body and temperament, family and speech, domestic peace, the spouse and partnerships, longevity and sudden change, and loss or expenditure. When the energetic signature of Mars falls in any of them, classical matchmaking treats the chart as Manglik and weighs that factor against the partner’s chart.

Mars (Mangal, Kuja, Angaraka) is a malefic of heat, courage, conflict and drive. In a supportive yoga it can give initiative and protection; in a dosha position relative to marriage houses it is traditionally read as adding friction, haste or delay to the path of vivaha. The same placement is often examined not only from the ascendant but also from the Moon (Chandra Lagna) and, in some schools, from Venus, because the Moon shows the mind and Venus the spouse-karaka.

A widespread practical rule is that when both partners are Manglik, the dosha is considered balanced and the match may proceed without the same level of concern.
