What the Ayyappa Ashtothram is

The Ayyappa Ashtothram is a list of 108 names of Ayyappa under his older title Dharma Shasta, each set in the form "Om ... namah". Other lists share the title; this one opens Mahashastre, Mahadevaya, Mahadevasutaya. No author or Purana is named for it. The names are built mostly from compounds and fall into loose clusters. Names 5 to 9 give him the making, sustaining and withdrawing of the worlds. Names 21 to 23 set him on lion, elephant and horse. Names 43 to 46 hold Shaiva and Vaishnava titles side by side, as befits the son of Shiva and Vishnu's female form, and 69 and 70 pair "with attributes" and "beyond attributes". Three tree names stand at 87 to 89: wish-granting, great, and of learning. Family closes the list: Pushkala and Purna at Name 99, Subrahmanya as elder brother at 103.

An older Shasta inside Ayyappa's names

No story of composition survives for this list, so its setting has to be read from the names themselves, and they point to a figure older than the Sabarimala legend. Tamil hero stones from around the third century name a guardian called Chattan, the Tamil form of Shasta. Sanskrit sources from about the seventh century call him Hariharasuta, and copper plates from twelfth-century Tiruvalla already use Ayyappan as another word for Shasta. Kerala folklore later told of a baby found beside the Pamba, raised by the childless king of Pandalam, who left the palace for the forest and slew the demoness Mahishi. None of that appears here. Pandalam, Manikanta, Mahishi and Sabarimala are all absent from the 108 names. Instead Name 78 records the defeat of a demon called Mallaka, Name 39 calls him son of the goddess Maya, and Name 12 gives him an army of bhutas, the spirit hosts. Name 99 is the clearest sign of this older layer. It joins him to Purna and Pushkala, the two consorts of Tamil Shasta worship, whereas Sabarimala keeps him as an eternal celibate.

Closing

इति श्रीधर्मशास्ताष्टोत्तरशतनामावलिः सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Thus ends the list of the one hundred and eight names of Dharma Shasta.

The syllable people get wrong

In the first name, mahāśāstre, the second word comes from śāstṛ, "ruler" or "teacher", not from śāstra, "scripture", so it ends in -stre with no a after the r: mah-AA-SHAAS-tray. The two words meet in Name 96, sarvaśāstrārtha-, where śāstra really is the scripture.

Questions

Nobody knows. The list carries no author, and printed forms name no Purana or Tantra as its source, so it is best described as a traditional devotional list of unknown date. It does appear in two shapes, a namavali of separate names and a verse stotram of the same names, but neither one states where it came from.
Two views of the deity meet here. At Sabarimala he is an eternal celibate yogi. In the wider Shasta tradition, strongest in Tamil Nadu, he stands with two consorts, Purna and Pushkala, and folk accounts describe them at his right and left. Achankovil in Kerala is a rare Ayyappa shrine that shows him married. Name 99, "united with Pushkala and Purna", belongs to that second view.
Both read mahajnanine, "the one of great wisdom", and this is not a slip of one printing. Every printed form of this list repeats the word at both places, so it is kept here as it stands. Name 83 just before it is kalajnanine, "knower of time", so the second occurrence sits beside a related title, while the first follows mahayogi and mahamayi.
The names are the same and run in the same order. The stotram binds them into fifteen Sanskrit verses in the nominative, opening "Mahashasta Mahadevo Mahadevasuto'vyayah", while the namavali turns each name into a separate salutation in the dative with "Om" and "namah". The two differ at a few points, such as Name 53, where the namavali has devaya and the stotram has a word for the Veda.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
