Ganapathi Ganesha Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 Names of Ganesha): Shiva offering flowers to Ganesha as the cities of Tripura gather
Shiva worshipping Ganesha before loosing the arrow at the three cities
Mantra · The 108 names, Vinayaka onward, that Shiva praised before Tripura

Ganesha Ashtottara Shatanamavali

ॐ विनायकाय नमः ।

Also known as Ganesha Ashtothram

In Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English — with the meaning of every word, and the one syllable most people pronounce wrongly.

What the Ganesha Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Ganesha Ashtottara Shatanamavali gives the 108 names of Ganesha in the form printed in Vinayaka Chaturthi puja books, opening with Vinayaka, Vighnaraja and Gauriputra and closing with Sarvasiddhipradayaka, the giver of every accomplishment. It names no author. The list is drawn from the Vighneshvara Ashtottarashatanama Stotram, where the same names fill fourteen and a half verses in the nominative; here each becomes a dative, as in vinayakaya, 'to Vinayaka', with Om before it and namah after. The order has a loose plan. The opening names place Ganesha in his family, as Gauri's son, Skanda's elder brother and the son of Sharva. Between Names 27 and 36 come the elephant face, the single tusk, the four arms, the great belly and the ears like winnowing fans. Names 39 and 40 call him Time and lord of the planets. Names 43 and 56 to 61 list what his hands hold: noose and goad, mace, discus, sugarcane bow and lotus. The last four names end on joy, contentment and a serene self.

Shiva's praise before the arrow at Tripura

The stotram behind this list names its first reciter in its closing lines. With these hundred and eight names, they say, Shankara praised his son, the lord of obstacles, when he rose to destroy Tripura, the three cities of the asuras. The Shiva Purana tells the episode without the names. In the tenth chapter of the Yuddha Khanda of its Rudra Samhita, Shiva holds his bow drawn in the archer's stance for a hundred thousand years, yet the three cities never come into his aim. A voice from the sky tells him that the cities will not fall until Ganesha has been worshipped. Shiva calls Bhadrakali, worships the elephant-faced god, and only then sees the three cities standing together as one target. Temple tradition at Acharapakkam in Kanchipuram district keeps another version: Shiva set out without first worshipping his son, Ganesha broke the axle pin of the great chariot, and the village takes its name from the broken achu. A second 108-name stotram, whose colophon places it in the Bhavishyottara Purana, has no Tripura line at all. In the Vinayaka Chaturthi puja, printed books set this namavali directly after the offering of twenty-one kinds of leaves and before the incense.

The syllable people get wrong

Name 2, vighnarājāya (विघ्नराजाय), is often said 'vig-na-raja' or 'vi-ghana-raja'. The gh is breathy and runs straight into the n with no vowel between them, and both following a's are long: VIGH-na-RAA-jaa-ya.

Questions

This is the list that opens Vinayaka, Vighnaraja, Gauriputra and has Devaya, Anekarchitaya, Kalaya and Kaivalyasukhadaya in its middle, the form printed in Vinayaka Chaturthi puja books in English transliteration and in Tamil. A second, closely related list begins the same way but reads Devanikarchita, Kavya and Amareshvara, and adds Chintamanidvipapati and Paramatma near the end. Many Telugu vratakalpam books use a third list altogether, opening Gajananaya, Ganadhyakshaya, Vighnarajaya, Vinayakaya.
Three names are repeated: Avyaya, the imperishable, at Names 6 and 14; Dvijapriya, dear to the twice-born, at Names 10 and 54; and Shanta, the peaceful, at Names 25 and 75. Two of the repeats are already in the verse text, where Dvijapriya stands in verses 1 and 7 and Shanta in verses 3 and 10. The second Avyaya comes from the puja books, which read vanipradaya, avyayaya where the verse has the single compound vanibalaprada. The count of 108 includes all three repeats.
The lines after the names say that one who worships Siddhivinayaka with devotion through this list, offering blades of durva grass, bilva leaves, flowers, or sandal paste with unbroken rice, obtains every wish and is released from every obstacle. The namavali printed for puja does not carry those lines. The pairing of durva and bilva returns inside the list itself as Name 97, Durvabilvapriya, the one fond of durva grass and bilva leaves.
Yes, where the Tamil book follows this recension. The Vinayagar Ashtothram printed in Tamil script for temple and home puja runs from Vinayakaya, Vighnarajaya and Gauriputraya to Sarvasiddhipradayakaya, with Devaya, Anekarchitaya, Kalaya and Kaivalyasukhadaya in their places and no Chintamanidvipapati. The words are Sanskrit, only written in Tamil letters. It ends with a line offering fragrant leaves and flowers of many kinds.

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
