What the Gayatri Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Gayatri Ashtottara Shatanamavali is a garland of 108 names of Gayatri Devi, each said as "om ... namah" in the form of a salutation. It is the name-list form of an anonymous Gayatri Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, and no printing names an author or a Purana for it. Other lists share the title; this one opens with Tarunadityasankasha, "she who shines like the young sun", and ends with Parameshvari. The first twenty-five names picture her: a thousand eyes, a golden lotus seat, a chariot, a voice like a thundercloud, homes on the Himalaya and on the banks of the Reva. Then twenty-four names in a row begin with the syllable ga, from Gayatri to Guhyalingangadharini, and twenty-six begin with an s syllable, opening with Savitri. A run of names on ma follows, from Mahendri to Madhuravasa. The close sets her at the centre of the orbs of sun, moon, fire, wind and space, and ends with Dhenu, the wish-giving cow, Papaghni and Parameshvari.

From a hymn in verse to a namavali

The list is drawn from a stotram in which the same names are strung together in couplets. In that verse form, nineteen verses carry the names, and the hymn then turns to direct praise, saluting her as Mahalakshmi, giver of great wealth, as the embodiment of compassion and as the one tender to her devotees. A phala shruti follows. Its verses say that the merit of reciting the 108 names of Gayatri is beyond even Brahma to measure, and that the reciter is freed from grave sins such as the killing of a brahmin; the last verse calls it a hymn that bears fruit quickly. These closing verses address a listener as dvijottama, "best of the twice-born", yet the text never says who is speaking, and no frame story names a sage or a setting. The namavali keeps the stotram's order and turns each epithet into a single salutation, the form used when names are offered one by one in archana. Printings differ in small ways. Several read chora for ghora at name 22, a slip that likely arose because the two letters look almost alike in Telugu script; the text given here reads ghora, as the verse form does, so the name means "engaged in rites of severe discipline".

Closing

इति श्री गायत्री अष्टोत्तरशतनामावली ॥

Thus ends the list of the hundred and eight names of Gayatri.

The syllable people get wrong

In name 39, gahvaryai (गह्वर्यै), the h closes the first syllable before the v: say gah-var-yai, not "gav-har-yai" with the two sounds swapped. The same h-before-v order runs through the word gahvara, a deep or hidden place.

Questions

No printing names an author, and none gives a Purana or other scripture as its source. It is a traditional devotional text, the name-list form of the Gayatri Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram that begins "tarunadityasankasha". The stotram's closing verses speak to a "best of the twice-born" but leave the speaker unnamed. Attributions of this list to a particular text are therefore best treated with caution.
The Gayatri mantra is a single Vedic verse, Rigveda 3.62.10, addressed to Savitar and recited with the vyahritis bhuh, bhuvah, svah. The Ashtottara is a later list of 108 epithets of the goddess Gayatri herself. It does not quote the Vedic verse, though several names point to it: Savitri, Sandhya, Pranavadyaksharatmika (the syllables that begin with Om) and Trisvara, the three accents of Vedic chant. The mantra and its dhyana have their own page at /mantra/gayatri-devi/.
The names gather sacred rivers and other goddesses into her. Names 27 to 29 call her Gomati, Ganga and Gautami, the Godavari. Sita comes at 64, Vaishnavi at 76, Mahalakshmi at 80, Meenakshi who dwells in Madhura at 87 and 88, and Uma, daughter of the mountain king, at 89 and 90. Read together, they present Gayatri as the one goddess behind each of these forms, seated even on Garuda and worshipped at the feet of Govinda.
Names 94 to 98 place her at the centre of five spheres: the orb of the sun, the orb of the moon, the orb of fire, the sphere of wind and the sphere of space, the elements that fill the world. The names after them carry the picture on. The moon's disc is her mirror (102), moonlight and sunlight anoint her limbs (103), and the great wind fans her (104). Name 101 sets her over the wheel of time.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
