What the Vishwakarma Mantra is

The Vishwakarma Mantra, in the form printed for Vishwakarma Puja, is a short sequence of six Sanskrit lines addressed to Vishwakarma, the craftsman of the gods. It opens with the name mantra Om Vishwakarmane Namah, the salutation said in japa and, with svaha added, at each offering into the fire. Two dhyana verses follow. The first, beginning Narayanabja, places him in a lineage: Brahma rose from the lotus of Narayana, Dharma was Brahma's son, Vastu was the son of Dharma, and Vishwakarma is the son of Vastu. The second, beginning Damshapala, pictures him as an armoured hero, maker and upholder of the world, holding the measuring rod. The pranam shloka Devashilpin salutes him as the one who completes the works of the gods, and a two-verse prarthana closes the set, bowing to the two-armed lord who lays out houses and their sites and asking the master of the science of crafts to be gracious. All six are anonymous puja shlokas shared by Hindi and Bengali manuals.

From the Vedic maker to the gods' builder

Long before the puja manuals, the name Vishvakarman, 'maker of all', belonged to a Vedic creator. Two hymns in the tenth book of the Rigveda (10.81 and 10.82) picture him as all-seeing, with eyes, faces, arms and feet on every side, and ask from what wood and what tree heaven and earth were shaped. In the epics and Puranas the name settles on one figure, the architect of the gods, and his parentage is told in more than one way. The Vishnu Purana makes him the son of Prabhasa, one of the eight Vasus, and of Varastri, sister of Brihaspati; the Mahabharata and Harivamsha name his mother Yogasiddha; other Puranas call him the son of Vastu, the line the Narayanabja verse follows. The Puranas also tell of his daughter Sanjna, married to Surya, who could not bear her husband's heat. According to tradition, Vishwakarma pared away an eighth of the Sun's brilliance and forged weapons from it, among them the Sudarshana disc and the trident. Shilpa texts such as the Vishwakarma Prakasha are handed down under his name. The two-armed form named in the prarthana is not the only image: western India often shows him four-armed and aged with a hamsa beside him, while eastern India shows a young, moustached figure riding an elephant.

Dhyanam 2

दण्डपाणे नमस्तुभ्यं तेजोमूर्तिधर प्रभो ॥

Be gracious, O Vishwakarma, master of the science of crafts. O Lord who holds the rod in your hand and whose form is radiance, salutation to you.

The syllable people get wrong

In viśvakarmaṇe the ṇ is retroflex, said with the tongue tip curled back, and the word ends in three clear syllables kar-ma-ṇe, not 'karmaye' and not swallowed into namaḥ. The opening śv is 'shv', with the v nearer a soft w, so the whole reads roughly 'Vish-wa-kar-ma-ne'.

When the Vishwakarma Mantra is chanted

Festival. Vishwakarma Puja, on Kanya Sankranti in mid-September

Questions

Vishwakarmane is the dative form of Vishwakarma, 'to the maker of all', and namah means salutation, so the line reads 'Om, salutation to Vishwakarma'. It is the name mantra of his worship and is said with each upachara offered to the image. When the same line is used as an oblation into the fire, the printed manuals add svaha at the end: Om Vishwakarmane Namah Svaha.
The verse follows one Puranic line of descent: Brahma born from the lotus in Narayana's navel, Brahma's son Dharma, Dharma's son Vastu, and Vastu's son Vishwakarma. Other texts tell it differently, making him the son of the Vasu Prabhasa and of Brihaspati's sister. The verse uses the genealogy to praise him as the one skilled in shaping heaven and the other worlds, and closes with 'we remember him always'.
The Devashilpin shloka, 'O craftsman of the gods, most blessed one', is the pranam or namaskara verse in both the Hindi and the Bengali puja. In Bengali printings it is often written with the sandhi joined, Vishwakarmannamastubhyam. The Damshapala verse, with its armoured hero and measuring rod, is the dhyana said in the Bengali puja held on the last day of the month of Bhadra.
No. The aarti sung at many Vishwakarma Puja gatherings is a later Hindi devotional song whose last stanza carries an author's name, and it is not printed here. This page keeps to the Sanskrit shlokas of the worship itself: the name mantra, the two dhyana verses, the pranam shloka and the two-verse prarthana, in the order the puja uses them.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
