The Ritual and Its Weight
The Kalabhairava Ashtakam Homa takes the eight verses Adi Shankaracharya composed before the guardian of Kashi and turns them into oblation. Each stanza is chanted, each chant sealed with ghee into the fire. Where a stotra recited at home is a prayer, the same stotra offered into agni becomes an act — the fire carries the syllables, and the sankalpa carries your name, gotra and nakshatra with them.
Tradition places this rite in the domain of protection. Kala Bhairava is the kotwal, the watchman who holds the keys of the sacred city and turns away what has no business entering. Devotees who sense the pressure of ill-will, the residue of an evil eye, or interference they cannot name come to this homa to ask for that guardianship. What a Maha Homa is
Not every fire ritual is performed at the same scale. A Maha Homa is our largest form — more priests, a longer fire, and the complete chanting sequence the rite prescribes rather than an abridged one. This is what that means in practice.
A Maha Homa is performed for one devotee and their named family, the same as any homa we conduct. What the scale changes is the weight of the offering — ten trained voices holding one hymn for two hours is a different undertaking from one voice for an hour, and it is reserved for the intentions that warrant it.

Bhairava's hours are the dark ones — the eighth tithi, the eighth day of the week's reckoning, and the deep night.
The ashtami of the waning moon each month is Bhairava's own tithi and the most sought-after day for this homa.

A note on sacred tradition
As per strict Agama vidhi, no videography is permitted inside the temple sanctum — this preserves the pure sacred energies and undisturbed divine focus of the ritual. The main homa is respectfully telecast live from outside the sanctum.
Homas are telecast openly on our YouTube channel so that devotees everywhere may witness the rituals — and because we believe you should be able to see our work before you trust us with yours. How to wear your energised yantra
The energised yantra is carefully rolled and sealed inside a sacred silver amulet before shipping. Wearing it is itself a small ritual — and even its timing is set for you personally.

Purify the amulet
Dip the silver amulet in raw milk or Ganga jal for an hour before wearing, then clean with normal water.
Face East or North
Perform the wearing process facing east or north for maximum benefit.

Show lamp and incense to the amulet before wearing it.

Around your neck or waist, on a thread or chain.

Ganapati Puja
The customary invocation to Ganapati, clearing obstacles before the deity is approached.
Agni Pratishtha
The fire is consecrated in the homa kunda and Agni invoked as the carrier of every offering that follows.
Kala Bhairava Avahana
The Kalabhairava Ashtakam is chanted, inviting the deity's presence into the fire — by five priests.
Ahuti
Ghee and akshata, with the flowers, grains and dravyas proper to this deity, are offered in sequence with mantra.
Purnahuti
The final complete offering seals the sankalpa stated at the opening.

Kala Bhairava
The fierce guardian aspect of Shiva, he stands dark-limbed and sky-clad, a serpent for his sacred thread, the crescent in his matted hair, a trident and a drum in his hands and a dog at his feet as his vahana. Kashi knows him as its kotwal, the watchman who holds the keys of the city; tradition says no one enters or departs that sacred ground outside his reckoning. His name joins kala, time, to bhairava, the terrifying one — he is Shiva as the master of time, before whom accounts are settled. Adi Shankaracharya's eight verses praise his lotus feet, served by Indra himself, and the sages who bow before him. Devotees turn to this form when they want a boundary drawn, seeking a guardian rather than a giver.
