The Ritual and Its Weight

The Subramanya Ashtaka Homa is built around eight verses of praise to Lord Subramanya — the Karavalamba Stotra, sung by a devotee who asked Skanda for the support of his hand. Each verse is a plea, and each plea is offered into the fire with ghee. Where a simple recitation ends in the air, a homa carries the words through Agni, the mouth of the gods. That is the weight of this rite. The Ashtaka is not merely read; it is fed to the flame, syllable by syllable.

Devotees turn to the Subramanya Ashtaka Homa when the inner life feels clouded — when japa has gone dry, when doubt crowds out devotion, when the mind will not sit still. Subramanya is the deity who taught the meaning of Pranava to his own father. He is invoked here as the remover of confusion and the kindler of viveka, discernment. The tradition prescribes this homa for the seeker who wants the path made plain and the heart made warm again.

O Lord and master, ocean of compassion, friend of the helpless, joy of Shiva and Parvati, whose feet are worshipped by Vishnu and all the gods — consort of Valli, extend your hand and hold me up.

What a Maha Homa is

Not every fire ritual is performed at the same scale. A Maha Homa is our largest form — more priests, a longer fire, and the complete chanting sequence the rite prescribes rather than an abridged one. This is what that means in practice.

Priests5Chanting in unison, never in rotation
The fire burnsApprox. 5 hoursFrom the sankalpa to the final aarti
ChantedIn fullThe complete sequence the rite calls for, not an excerpt
TelecastEvery minuteNothing is performed off camera

A Maha Homa is never a group ceremony, the same as any homa we conduct. What the scale changes is the weight of the offering — ten trained voices holding one hymn for two hours is a different undertaking from one voice for an hour, and it is reserved for the intentions that warrant it.

Why devotees book this

Benefits of the Subrahmanya Ashtaka Homa

The Ashtaka asks for one thing above all — the steadying hand of the Lord. These are the intentions the tradition attaches to this homa.

Steadiness in Sadhana

Offered when japa, meditation or daily worship has lost its warmth, to re-kindle regularity and taste in practice.

Clarity of Mind

Subramanya is invoked as Jnana Skanda, the giver of discernment, when decisions blur and the mind will not settle.

Deepening of Bhakti

Each of the eight verses is a surrender. Devotees offer this homa to soften pride and let devotion come more naturally.

Inner Peace

The rite is prescribed for those carrying restlessness, fear or agitation, seeking a quieter interior.

Divine Protection on the Path

Skanda carries the Vel, the spear of discrimination. The homa is offered for shelter from the obstacles that trouble a seeker.

Grace for the Whole Family

Many families sponsor this homa in the name of children and elders, asking for Subramanya's blessing on the household's spiritual life.

There is nothing to choose. Unlike most of our homas, the Subramanya Ashtaka Homa is not offered at several priest counts. In this homa

2,160 ahutis in all. Each of the 5 priests makes 54 complete recitations of the Subrahmanya Ashtakam (270 in all), with one offering at every verse, and all of them perform at the same time, in one ceremony.

Has your astrologer prescribed a different ritual count? Our priests can review it and arrange a customised homa. Call our Devotee Relationship Team on +91 96295 55442 — they confirm the count, the priests, the approximate duration and the total price before you book.

Sacred timing

The most auspicious days for a Subramanya Ashtaka Homa

Skanda's own days carry the strongest current for this rite. Our panchanga scholars fix your muhurat and confirm it with you before the fire is lit.

Shashti Tithi

The sixth lunar day is Subramanya's tithi. Skanda Shashti in Aippasi, and every monthly Shashti, are the classical days for this homa.

Krittika and Vishakha Nakshatra

Krittika, the star of the six mothers who nursed him, and Vishakha, his own nakshatra, are held especially favourable.

Tuesdays and Vaikasi Visakam

Tuesday belongs to Kuja, kin to Skanda's martial nature. Vaikasi Visakam, the day of his appearance, is a high occasion for the Subramanya Ashtaka Homa.

Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram

Both festival days are traditionally chosen for Skanda worship and are well suited to sponsoring this rite.

You do not need to wait for one of these days. Whenever you book, our astrologers calculate the muhurta from your own birth chart — a date chosen for you personally, which tradition regards as more precise than a calendar date chosen for everyone. If you would like the homa on one of the days above, tell us at checkout and we will fix the muhurta within it.

Every package

What you receive

The Subrahmanya Yantra sealed inside the sacred silver amulet
An actual amulet received by a devotee. Your Subramanya Yantra is a copper plate approx. 1–2 inches, rolled and sealed inside a silver amulet approx. 2–4 inches. Sizes are approximate and the amulet's design varies between supplier batches — shape, metal and consecration remain the same.

The sealing of the Subramanya Yantra

The Subramanya Yantra is consecrated over three days — Jala (holy-water consecration with mantras), Prana (life force through pranayama & chants) and Jeeva Pratishta (awakened with 108 recitations & offerings) — then present through your homa, receiving the energies raised in the fire. When your homa concludes, it is rolled and locked inside its silver amulet according to Agama vidhi — the practice by which those energies are held within a consecrated object rather than dispersing. It is why a homa performed at our ashram can still reach a devotee ten thousand miles away: what the fire raised travels to you, sealed.

This is what arrives at your door, at no extra cost, with your prasadam.

Personal sankalpa

Your name, gotra & nakshatra — and up to four family members if you wish. No one else is named.

Who is invoked

Subramanya

The Subramanya Karavalamba Stotram, popularly called the Subramanya Ashtakam, is an eight-verse Sanskrit hymn to Murugan, addressed by his names Swaminatha, Kartikeya and Subrahmanya. Popular tradition attributes it to Adi Shankaracharya, though the older printed stotra collections, among them the Brihat Stotra Ratnakara printed at Madras in 1927, carry it without an author's name. Every verse is a string of epithets that closes on the same request: vallisha-natha mama dehi karavalambam, 'lord of Valli, give me the support of your hand.' The epithets move in order. Verses one and two place him in his family and among the gods, with the sage Narada singing his fame. Verse three turns to his generosity, naming him a constant giver of food. Verses four to six recall his weapons, the splitting of Krauncha and the defeat of Shura and Taraka. Verse seven describes his crowning by Indra and the sages, and verse eight asks his glance to wash the mind clean of desire. Two short closing verses state the merit of reciting it.

In this homa that grace is invoked through fire, with your own name and birth details spoken in the sankalpa.

Questions

Frequently asked

The Subrahmanya Ashtaka Homa, also called the Subrahmanya Ashtaka Homam, is a Vedic fire ritual centred on the Subrahmanya Ashtakam, the hymn to Lord Subrahmanya known as the Karavalamba Stotra: a devotee's repeated plea that the Lord extend his hand and hold them up. Priests chant the Ashtakam with your sankalpa and offer ghee, samidha and other dravyas into the consecrated fire at each verse. Its significance lies in the pairing: an intensely personal prayer of surrender carried by Agni, the traditional messenger of offerings to the devatas. Its whole thrust is inward: clarity, bhakti and the seeker's steadiness.
The tradition prescribes this homa for renewed steadiness in sadhana, for discernment when the mind is clouded, for deepening of devotion, and for the inner quiet that comes of surrender. Subrahmanya is invoked as the wielder of the Vel, the spear of discrimination, so the rite is also offered for shelter from the obstacles that trouble a spiritual seeker. Families often sponsor it as a blessing on the household's collective devotional life. These are the intentions the shastra attaches to the rite, offered in faith.
Anyone drawn to Skanda may book it. It is chosen most often by those whose practice has gone dry, those facing a decision that needs a clear head, devotees beginning a new sadhana or mantra diksha, and those with Kuja prominent in the chart whose astrologer has recommended Subrahmanya upasana. Parents also book it in a child's name for learning and good conduct. There is no bar of gender, age or country: our priests perform it at our Yagna Ashram on your behalf, as one private ceremony for you and up to four family members, and you watch it live.
Our priests begin with achamana, Ganapati puja and punyahavachana to purify the space, then take the sankalpa in your name, nakshatra and gotra. A kalasha is established and Subrahmanya is invoked. Agni is kindled in the kunda with aranya samidha. The Subrahmanya Ashtakam is then recited in full, with oblations offered at each verse, every priest making their own offerings of ghee, palasha and vata samidha, honey, jaggery, sesame, rice, navadhanya, flowers and fruits. Purnahuti, deeparadhana and mangala arati close the rite, followed by prasadam. The whole sequence is telecast live to you from our Yagna Ashram.
The Subrahmanya Ashtaka Homa is performed by five priests, as one package: the complete homa, performed privately for you and up to four family members and never combined with another booking. Every priest makes their own offerings into the fire, and all of them perform at the same time, in one ceremony. Each priest makes 54 complete recitations of the Subrahmanya Ashtakam, with one offering at every verse: 270 recitations and 2,160 ahutis in all. An ahuti count is a count of these offerings, not a japa count, which measures repetitions of a mantra. The homa is performed the one way the rite requires, and no homa guarantees a particular result.
Yes. Our listed Subrahmanya Ashtaka Homa package specifies standard ritual quantities and priest numbers. If your astrologer has prescribed a different count, we can arrange a customised homa following review by our priests. Please share your requirements with our Devotee Relationship Team on +91 96295 55442. The team will confirm the requested recitation or offering count, number of priests, approximate duration and total price before you book. Your customised homa remains a private ceremony dedicated to your sankalpa, never combined with other customers' bookings.
Approximately five hours. The priests perform together and make their offerings at the same time, so the ceremony keeps one pace. Your muhurta, the date and time, is confirmed by email within 24–48 working hours of booking, and the live telecast link arrives the day before, so you can follow every stage wherever you are.
You do not need to wait for an auspicious day. Whenever you book, our astrologers calculate the muhurta from your own birth chart — a date chosen for you personally, which tradition regards as more precise than a calendar date chosen for everyone. If you would prefer one of the days traditionally sacred to Subrahmanya — Shashti tithi (above all Skanda Shashti in Aippasi), Krittika or Vishakha nakshatra, a Tuesday, Vaikasi Visakam, Thai Poosam, or Panguni Uthiram — tell us in the notes at checkout and we will fix the muhurta within it. Our Panchang shows the tithi and nakshatra for any date.
Yes. What directs a homa is its sankalpa: the solemn resolve the priest makes before the fire is kindled, stating who the homa is for and what it is offered for. The deity invoked and the ritual remain the same; the purpose is yours, as your astrologer has advised it. So if you have been advised the Subrahmanya Ashtaka Homa for a reason other than those on this page, write that purpose in your own words in the “Your sankalpa” box on the birth-details page, straight after payment, and the priest will state it in the sankalpa with your name, gotra and nakshatra. If the advice also names a date, a number of recitations or a number of priests, mention it in the notes at checkout, or call our Devotee Relationship Team on +91 96295 55442 before you book.
Book the Subrahmanya Ashtaka Homa online on this page, from India or from any other country; devotees living abroad book it the same way, and prices are shown in your currency. It is performed by five priests, the one package offered, and straight after payment add your name, gotra if you know it and your birth star, with your prayer for the homa in the “Your sankalpa” box. Your muhurta is confirmed by email within 24–48 working hours and the live telecast link arrives the day before, so you can watch the entire homa live, wherever you are. Afterwards, prasadam and your energised Subrahmanya Yantra are couriered to you anywhere in the world, free of shipping cost.
The Subrahmanya Ashtaka Homa includes the energised Subrahmanya Yantra: a copper plate of about 1–2 inches, consecrated over three days and present in the fire through your homa. It is then rolled and sealed inside a silver amulet of about 2–4 inches, made to be worn, and couriered to you with your prasadam, free of shipping cost, usually reaching you in 1–2 weeks within India and 2–4 weeks internationally from the homa’s completion; the tracking email gives your personal time to wear it.
Our silver amulets are specially made for everyday wear: copper is added to the silver to make them more durable. With regular use, the amulet may turn black, reddish or brown as it is exposed to heat and reacts with the chemicals in cosmetics. Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth, keep perfume and cosmetics away from it, and clean it by rubbing it gently with a pinch of vibhuti (sacred ash). Every six months, polish it with cotton dipped in a silver cleaner, but never soak or dip the amulet itself. Never open it, as the energies of the yantra are sealed inside. If it is ever damaged, send it back to us, not to a jeweller.

Your ritual date is an auspicious muhurta calculated personally for you — not a slot on a rota. Once it is confirmed, rescheduling from the customer's side is not available, and cancellation does not carry a refund. If we ever have to move your ritual for unforeseen reasons at the ashram, we will inform you immediately and provide a fresh auspicious date at no cost — and your telecast, recording, prasadam and yantra remain exactly as promised.

Read the full refund and cancellation policy.
