Durga Durga Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 Names of Durga): Navaratri kumari puja before eight-armed Durga on her lion
A young girl honoured as the Goddess before the reading of the 108 names
Mantra · Shiva's 108 names for Durga, from Sati to Brahmavadini

Durga Ashtottara Shatanamavali

ॐ सत्यै नमः ।

Also known as Durga Ashtothram

In Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English — with the meaning of every word, and the one syllable most people pronounce wrongly.

What the Durga Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Durga Ashtottara Shatanamavali sets out the 108 names of Durga that Shiva recites to Parvati in the Vishvasara Tantra, each one framed by Om and namah as a salutation of its own. Its source is a stotram of twenty-one verses: one verse of introduction, fourteen verses of names and six closing verses. The standard printed edition of the Saptashati places that stotram near the front of the book, ahead of the Saptashati itself. The list begins with Sati, Daksha's daughter, and ends with Brahmavadini, she who speaks of Brahman. In between, the names fall into recognisable runs: six terms running from manas, the mind, to chiti, consciousness; the seven Mother goddesses from Brahmi to Varahi; four victories of the Devi Mahatmya; and eight names that move from Kumari, the girl, through Yuvati, the young woman, to Vriddhamata, the aged mother. Ananta, the endless, appears twice, as Names 25 and 103.

The names Shiva gives to Parvati

The colophon places the stotram in the Vishvasara Tantra, a tantric work whose author and date are unknown. Its frame is brief. Ishvara, Shiva, turns to Parvati, calling her kamalanana, the lotus-faced, and announces a hundred names by whose favour alone Durga, the faithful Sati, is pleased. The names then follow her own history as the Puranas tell it. She is first Sati, dear to Bhava, Daksha's daughter and the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice. Then she is Aparna, a name Kalidasa's Kumarasambhava explains through Parvati's penance, when she refused even the fallen leaves on which ascetics lived. Later names recall the Devi Mahatmya: the slayer of Shumbha and Nishumbha, of Mahisha, of Madhu and Kaitabha, of Chanda and Munda, and Shivaduti, the form who in its eighth chapter sends Shiva himself as envoy to the demon kings. The six closing verses carry the phala shruti. In Shiva's words, nothing in the three worlds stays out of reach for one who reads these names daily; the verses list wealth, grain, children, a spouse, horses and elephants, the four aims of life and, at the end, lasting liberation. They also ask that a young girl, a kumari, be worshipped before the reading, and describe a yantra written in gorochana, lac, kumkum, sindoor, camphor and the three sweets.

The syllable people get wrong

Name 14 is caṇḍaghaṇṭāyai (चण्डघण्टायै), 'she whose bell sounds fiercely', and it is often said as Chandraghanta, the name of the third Navadurga, worshipped on the third day of Navaratri. There is no r here: say CHUN-da-GHUN-taa-yai, with both ṇḍ and ṇṭ made with the tongue curled back.

Questions

More than one 108-name list of Durga is in use. This one follows the Vishvasara Tantra stotram printed with the Durga Saptashati, so it opens with Sati, Sadhvi and Bhavaprita and closes with Pratyaksha and Brahmavadini. Other lists open with Durga, Shiva and Mahadevi and include names such as Simhavahini or Tripurasundari, which do not occur here. They are separate texts rather than variant copies of one list, so a reader comparing them name by name will find little overlap.
The stotram is verse: Shiva speaks the names in the nominative inside fourteen couplets, with an introductory verse before them and six verses of phala shruti after. The namavali lifts out only the names and turns each into the dative, so Sati becomes satyai and Bhavani becomes bhavanyai, each between Om and namah. Where the verse runs two names together, the namavali separates them: bhavyabhavya gives Bhavya and Abhavya, Names 28 and 29, and vimalotkarshini gives Vimala and Utkarshini, Names 60 and 61.
Shivaduti means 'she whose messenger is Shiva'. The name comes from the eighth chapter of the Devi Mahatmya. During the war with Shumbha and Nishumbha, a fierce shakti issues from the body of Chandika and tells Shiva to go as her envoy to the two demon kings: let Indra have the three worlds back and the gods their offerings, and go down to the nether world, or else come and fight. Because she sent Shiva himself as ambassador, the text says, she became known as Shivaduti.
In the stotram the two words close a single half-verse, chitta-rupa chita chitih, and they differ by one vowel. Chita is the funeral pyre, the place where every form ends; chiti is pure consciousness, which does not end. The line places them after manas, buddhi, ahankara and chitta, the faculties of the mind, so the goddess is named both as the pyre where a body is consumed and as the awareness that the earlier names were leading towards.

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
