What the Lakshmi Ashtothram is

The Lakshmi Ashtothram, in full the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali, the 108 names of Lakshmi as most households recite them, turns each name of the goddess into a salutation of its own, framed by Om and namah. It is the name-list form of the Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, an anonymous traditional hymn in which the names are spoken across fourteen verses; the namavali lifts them out of the verse and puts each in the dative, so lakshmim becomes lakshmyai, 'to Lakshmi'. The list opens with Prakriti and Vikriti, nature at its source and nature in its changed forms, and closes with Bhuvaneshvari, ruler of the worlds. Along the way come Svaha and Svadha, the calls that carry offerings to the gods and to the ancestors (Names 13 and 14), Aditi and Diti, mothers of the gods and of their rivals (21 and 22), and a run from Name 41 to 52 in which ten names are built on padma, the lotus. Dipta, the shining one, and Devi each occur twice.

The Goddess asks, Shiva answers

According to its opening verses, the stotram begins with a request. The Goddess addresses Shiva as lord of the gods, knower of the three times and giver of grace to devotees, and asks to hear the hundred and eight names of Lakshmi as they truly are. Ishvara praises the question and describes what she is asking for: a hymn secret beyond secrets and hard to obtain even for the gods, the seat of the sixty-four arts, the giver of the eight siddhis beginning with anima and of the treasures that begin with Padma. He then sets the ritual frame: Mahalakshmi is the deity of the hymn, klim its seed syllable and Bhuvaneshvari its power. A meditation verse follows, picturing her lotus in hand and gracious of face, adorned with many jewels, served by Hari, Hara and Brahma, with the conch and lotus treasures beside her. Fourteen verses of names follow. The closing verses call the hymn Daridrya-mochana, the release from poverty, set these hundred and eight apart as meritorious among the thousands of names of goddesses, and say that after enjoying abundant blessings the reciter reaches sayujya, union with her. The namavali echoes this frame: Name 107, the one endowed with knowledge of past, present and future, repeats the title the Goddess gave Shiva, and the last name, Bhuvaneshvari, is the power named at the start.

The syllable people get wrong

Name 76 is śriyai (श्रियै), the dative of śrī, and the long ī of śrī becomes a short i before the ending. Say SHRI-yai, with ś and r as one cluster, not 'shree-yai' or 'shree-ai'.

When the Lakshmi Ashtothram is chanted

Weekday. Friday

Festival. Varalakshmi Vratam, as the archana of the puja

Questions

In the stotram the words appear as kamakshim krodhasambhavam in some copies and kama kshirodasambhavam in others, a difference of word division and two letters. Krodhasambhava would mean 'born of wrath'. Kshirodasambhava means 'born of the Ocean of Milk', which matches the churning account of her rising and Name 94, samudratanaya, the ocean's daughter. Most printed namavalis carry the Milk-Ocean reading, and it is the one given here. One printing also reads Kshama, the patient one, for Name 28 in place of Kamakshi.
The last six names widen the goddess beyond the consort of Vishnu. After Name 103 calls her the one who wards off every trouble, she is named the nine Durgas and Mahakali, then the very self of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the knower of the three times, and finally Bhuvaneshvari. The stotram prepares for this in its frame, where Mahalakshmi is the deity and Bhuvaneshvari the power. Tradition reads the list as moving from the Lakshmi of the household shrine to the one goddess behind every form.
No. More than one 108-name list of Lakshmi is in use. This one opens with Prakriti, Vikriti and Vidya. Other lists open with names such as brahmajnayai or shuddhalakshmyai and follow a different order, so a name-by-name comparison will not line up. Some printings of this list also place a meditation verse, vande padmakaram, before Name 1; it pictures the goddess before the names begin and is not counted among the 108.
Bilvanilaya means 'she whose dwelling is the bilva', the wood-apple tree. The link is old: the Sri Suktam, the Vedic hymn to Shri, names the bilva as her own tree and asks its fruits to drive away misfortune. In the stotram the name shares a half-verse with Bhaskari, she who shines like the sun, Vararoha, she of graceful form, and Yashasvini, the renowned, so the line joins her radiance to the tree that tradition treats as her home.

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
