What the Navratri Mantra is

The Navratri mantra for each night is a pair of short texts: the name mantra 'Om Devi ... namah', which salutes that night's Durga by name in the dative case, and a two-line dhyana shloka that pictures her. Neither has a named author; the nine dhyana verses are the ones printed together as the Navadurga Stotram. On Pratipada, Shailaputri wears the half moon on her crown. On the second day Brahmacharini holds a rosary and a water pot, and on the third Chandraghanta is armed with weapons of fierce wrath. Kushmanda holds two pots, one filled to the brim and one steeped in blood. Skandamata sits on a lion throne with a lotus in each hand. Katyayani's hand gleams with the curved sword called chandrahasa as she rides a tiger. Kalaratri, on the seventh night, rides a donkey and alone takes two shlokas. Mahagauri is dressed in white on a white bull, and on Navami Siddhidatri is served by siddhas, gods and asuras.

Brahma's count and the nine nights kept

The order of the nights comes from the Devi Kavacham, the armour hymn read before the Durga Saptashati. Asked by the sage Markandeya for a hidden protection, Brahma first counts the Goddess's forms by number, Shailaputri the first and Siddhidatri the ninth, and calls them the nine Durgas. Navaratri gives each number one night, so the form honoured is fixed by the tithi of the bright fortnight, from Pratipada to Navami. How the nights are kept is told in the third book of the Devi Bhagavata Purana, where Vyasa answers King Janamejaya. It names Chaitra in spring and Ashvina in autumn as the two seasons of the vow, autumn being the chief. Preparation begins on the new-moon day with a single meal. On Pratipada the Goddess is installed on a raised altar under a pavilion, and where no image is at hand a water pot holding gold, gems and five leafy twigs stands in her place. The same chapter sets out the worship of young girls, giving one name to each age from two to ten, Kumari to Subhadra. A later chapter relates that Rama kept the vow on a hilltop in Ashvina with Narada as his priest, and that the Goddess appeared to him on a lion on the night of Ashtami.

The syllable people get wrong

In the Day 9 mantra, siddhidātryai has four syllables, sid-dhi-dā-tryai: the d is doubled with breath on the second, dā is long, and tryai is a single syllable rhyming with 'try' plus the 'ai' of 'aisle'. 'Siddhi-daatri-yai' adds a fifth syllable the word does not have.

When the Navratri Mantra is chanted

Weekday. Friday

Festival. Sharada and Chaitra Navaratri, one form for each night

Questions

The order follows the tithis of the bright fortnight: Shailaputri on Pratipada, Brahmacharini on Dwitiya, Chandraghanta on Tritiya, Kushmanda on Chaturthi, Skandamata on Panchami, Katyayani on Shashthi, Kalaratri on Saptami, Mahagauri on Ashtami and Siddhidatri on Navami. The nights are counted by tithi, so the calendar dates move each year, but the order never does. Vijayadashami, the tenth day, follows the nine.
The name mantra is a single salutation: Om, the title Devi, the form's name with the ending meaning 'to her', and namah. It addresses her and nothing more. The dhyana shloka is a two-line verse in anushtubh metre that describes her, giving her mount, what she holds or how she is dressed, and most end by asking her to grant what is good. Each day's pair is printed with the salutation first and the description after it.
Yes. Both Navaratris fall in the bright fortnight, Chaitra in spring and Ashvina in autumn, and both keep the same nine forms in the same order with the same mantras. The Devi Bhagavata Purana names both seasons for the vow and treats autumn as the principal one. Chaitra Navaratri closes on Rama Navami, the birthday of Rama, which is why some call it Rama Navaratri; the nine mantras themselves do not change.
No. The Navarna is a single nine-syllable mantra of Chamunda, so called from nava, nine, and varna, syllable, and it belongs to the reading of the Durga Saptashati rather than to any one night. The Devi Bhagavata Purana places a yantra bearing this nine-syllable mantra beside the image when the Navaratri altar is set up. The mantras on this page are different: nine separate name mantras and dhyana verses, one pair for each form on her own night.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
