What the Rama Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Rama Ashtottara Shatanamavali, often called the Sri Rama Ashtothram, is the list of 108 names of Rama said one by one in worship, each placed between Om and namah. It is the namavali form of a short anushtup stotram that printings ascribe to the Padma Purana, and it opens with Shri Rama, Ramabhadra and Ramachandra. Other lists carry the same title, among them one from the Ananda Ramayana and one by Tyagaraja; those begin with different names. The order is loose but readable. The first dozen names give titles and lineage: Raghu's foremost son, Janaki's beloved, the son of Kausalya. A long run then recalls deeds of the Ramayana, from Tataka and Ahalya to Vali, the bridge and Ravana's ten heads. Interleaved are names of character, such as the one who speaks first and speaks little. The list closes on a cluster built on para, supreme: supreme Self, supreme Brahman, supreme light, supreme abode.

The Ramayana told in single names

No episode of composition is recorded for these names. Printings place the stotram behind them in the Padma Purana without giving a chapter, and its closing half-verse simply says that these are the hundred and eight names of Shri Ramachandra. Printings of the stotram set two dhyana verses before it: Rama seated with Vaidehi on a jewelled throne in a golden pavilion beneath the wish-granting tree, Bharata and the brothers around him, while Hanuman, son of the wind, expounds the highest truth to the sages. It is the court of Ayodhya after the return, and from there the names look back over the whole journey. Vishvamitra's favour and the slaying of Tataka (Names 13 and 31) belong to the forest of the boy princes; the broken bow of Shiva and the humbling of Parashurama (27 and 30) to the wedding at Mithila. Chitrakuta, Viradha, Khara, Dushana and Trishiras follow the exile. In Kishkindha, the seven trees pierced by one arrow (28) come just before Vali falls and Sugriva receives his kingdom. Name 95 recalls the Shiva linga that Rama is said to have installed before the crossing, the tradition kept at Rameswaram, and Name 56 the fallen vanaras restored to life after the war.

Closing

॥ इति श्रीरामाष्टोत्तरशतनामावलिस्समाप्ता ॥

Thus ends the list of the one hundred and eight names of Shri Rama.

The syllable people get wrong

Jitāmitrāya (Names 11 and 49) joins jita, conquered, with amitra, enemy, so the vowel after jit is a long ā: say ji-TAA-mit-raa-ya. With a short a it is heard as jitamitra, one who has conquered his friends, the opposite of the name.

When the Rama Ashtottara Shatanamavali is chanted

Weekday. Thursday

Festival. Rama Navami

Questions

The repetition comes from the stotram itself. Its second verse calls Rama jitamitro among the opening titles, and its eighth verse uses the same word again in a run of three: jitendriyo, jitakrodho, jitamitro, master of the senses, of anger and of enemies. When the verses were turned into a namavali, both places were kept, so the printed list carries the name twice. Editions differ only in spelling, some reading jitamitra with a short vowel at Name 49.
Yes. Each name is a word of that stotram turned into the dative, so ramabhadrah becomes ramabhadraya, to Ramabhadra. In a few places the two do not match. Where most namavali printings have Name 15, the one intent on protecting those who seek refuge, one printing of the stotram reads two names meaning conqueror and scorcher of enemies. Where the stotram reads first god, great god, the namavali has first Person, supreme Person and great Person.
It recalls the twelfth sarga of the Kishkindha Kanda. To give Sugriva confidence before the contest with Vali, Rama looses a single arrow that passes through seven sala trees and a mountain shelf, enters the earth and returns to his quiver. The namavali says tala, palm, as most printings do, while one printing reads sala, the word of the Ramayana itself; both refer to the same arrow.
A group from Name 72 to Name 80 does this. Dayasara is the one whose essence is compassion. Smitavaktra is the one with a smiling face, mitabhashin the one of measured speech, and purvabhashin the one who speaks first, greeting others before they greet him. Anantagunagambhira, deep with endless virtues, and Dhirodattagunottama, steadfast and noble, close the run. Earlier, Names 14 and 47 to 48 praise self-restraint and mastery of the senses and of anger.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
