What the Shani Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Shani Ashtottara Shatanamavali, the shani ashtottara or list of 108 names of Saturn, salutes Shani one name at a time, each set between Om and namah with the name in the dative case: Om Shanaishcharaya namah, 'Om, salutations to the one who moves slowly'. No author or Purana is named for it. The names run in the order of the 21-verse Shani Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, so they come in small clusters that often share a sound: four ghana names (12-15), five names in n with three nila names among them (27-31), a run of names mostly in v (32-41). Some describe him: dark blue, clothed in blue, under a blue umbrella, riding the vulture, short in stature. Some give his family: son of Chhaya and of the Sun, consort of Jyeshtha. Many come as pairs of opposites, moving and steady, knowledge and ignorance, blamed and revered, beyond qualities and made of them.

A list drawn from twenty-one verses

According to tradition the namavali is the verse stotram taken apart for worship. The stotram's first verse reads shanaishcharaya shantaya sarvabhishtapradayine, sharanyaya varenyaya sarveshaya namo namah; put Om before each of its five words and namah after, and Names 1 to 5 of the list appear. Twenty-one verses give the 108 names in this way, and the readings of the list are checked against the verse lines, whose metre needs a fixed number of syllables. The stotram closes with one more verse, ittham shanaishcharayedam namnam ashtottaram shatam, which says that a mortal who recites these 108 names every day gains a long life. The list carries the same idea inside it: Name 51 calls Shani ayushyakarana, the cause of long life. Because each name stands alone, the namavali suits worship in which a name is spoken with every flower or grain offered. At Thirunallar in the Karaikal district, Shani stands in his own shrine on the north side of the entrance tower of the Shiva temple, and is honoured as its doorkeeper before devotees go in to Shiva. The temple's chief Shani festival, Sani Peyarchi, marks the day Saturn moves into a new sign of the zodiac, about once in two and a half years.

Closing

॥ इति शनि अष्टोत्तरशतनामावलिः सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Thus ends the list of the 108 names of Shani.

The syllable people get wrong

In Name 22, chāyāputrāya (छायापुत्राय), the first sound is the aspirated छ, so say 'chhaa-yaa', with a breath after the ch and both a's long; a plain unaspirated 'chaya' turns Chhaya, the shadow mother of Shani, into a different word.

When the Shani Ashtottara Shatanamavali is chanted

Festival. Shani Jayanti (Amavasya of Jyeshtha or Vaishakha)

Questions

They carry the same 108 names in the same order. The stotram strings them into 21 verses of praise, each ending namo namah, and adds a closing verse which says that a mortal who recites the names daily gains a long life. The namavali sets out each name on its own with Om and namah. The Shani bija mantra that some printings place before the list is a separate mantra and is not one of the 108.
The list does not soften him. Kurupin (45) means of unlovely form, kutsita (46) the one who is shunned, nindya (95) the one who is blamed, krura (102) fierce, and Name 105 calls him the cause of enmity even with spouse and children. Each hard name sits near its answer: nindya is followed at once by vandaniya, worthy of reverence, and the fierce names are followed by pariposhitabhakta, the one who nourishes his devotees.
At six places (Names 20, 24, 26, 30, 50 and 67) the printed lists fall into two families. This page follows the family whose readings match the verse stotram line by line: sharatuniradharine, 'who carries a quiver of arrows', rather than shatatunira, and chanchalaya, 'ever on the move', because the stotram line charasthirasvabhavaya chanchalaya namo namah needs that word to keep its eight syllables.
Name 64, jyeshthapatnisametaya, salutes Shani as the one accompanied by his wife Jyeshtha. Jyeshtha is the goddess called the elder sister of Lakshmi, because in the Kamba Ramayana's telling she rose from the churning of the ocean before Lakshmi. In Tamil she is Mudevi and Kakkaikkodiyal, 'she of the crow banner'. Her worship was widespread in South India in the seventh and eighth centuries and faded after the tenth.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
