What the Surya Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Surya Ashtottara, in full the Surya Ashtottara Shatanamavali, is the list of 108 names of Surya, the Sun, each spoken as 'Om ... namah', a salutation to that name. It is not a separate composition: the names are lifted one by one, in order, from the twenty verses of the Surya Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, whose closing line assigns it to the Atharvana Rahasya. That stotram is built on the Sanskrit alphabet. Its first sixteen verses open on the sixteen vowels in their fixed order, a, aa, i, ii, u, uu, ri, rri, the two l-vowels, e, ai, o, au, am and ah, so Name 1 begins with a, Name 12 with i, Name 37 with ri and Name 83 with ah. Name 42 even names a letter: the one whose form is the vowel rri. After the vowels the list turns to titles of rule, the lord of the planets and of all the worlds, then Surya, Kavi and Narayana, and closes on Surya Narayana.

Sixteen vowels, a charioteer and lost teeth

The colophon of the source stotram gives its home as the Atharvana Rahasya, a title that links it to the Atharva tradition; no poet is named and no telling of how it was first spoken survives with it. Its setting is the alphabet itself. The matrika, the ordered letters of Sanskrit, are treated in tradition as sacred sound, and a hymn that salutes the deity through each vowel in turn offers the whole of speech to him. Several names carry older stories in a single word. Name 36 describes a charioteer whose form has no thighs: Aruna, the dawn, who drives the Sun's chariot. Name 46, Luptadanta, the one whose teeth were lost, recalls the Bhagavata Purana's account of Daksha's sacrifice, where Pushan laughed and showed his teeth while Shiva was being cursed, and Shiva's host later struck those teeth out. Pushan is one of the Adityas, so the Sun bears the name. Name 65 gives him tawny-green horses, and Name 73 seats him in his chariot raised to the place of exaltation. There the vowel scheme shows through the printing: the stotram's verse 14 opens with an au-word, aunnatya, height, as its place in the alphabet requires, while the namavali gives the plainer uccasthana with the same sense, so the au slot reads with u.

Closing

॥ इति सूर्य अष्टोत्तरशतनामावलिः सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Thus ends the list of the 108 names of Surya.

The syllable people get wrong

Name 38, rugghantre (from ruj, disease, and hantṛ, destroyer), is often flattened to 'ru-gan-tre'. Say rug-ghan-tre: close the first syllable on a plain g, then release the aspirated gh, so both consonants are heard.

Questions

They are two different texts. The Mahabharata's list, in the Aranyaka Parva, is taught by the priest Dhaumya to Yudhishthira and opens 'Surya, Aryaman, Bhaga, Tvashtr, Pushan'; it names the line of teaching as Brahma to Indra, Indra to Narada, then Dhaumya, and the same hymn appears in the Brahma Purana. The list on this page opens 'Om Arunaya' and comes from the Atharvana Rahasya stotram, which runs through the vowels in order. Few of their names coincide.
The seed syllables are part of the source stotram itself: its verse 19 reads 'Om shrim hiranyagarbhaya, Om hrim sampatkaraya, Om aim ishtarthadaya', so the namavali keeps them. The names they stand before speak of the golden womb from which all arises, the maker of prosperity and the giver of what is desired. Some printings drop the three syllables and keep only the names, which changes the sound of those lines but not the count.
The list treats the Sun as the one light behind the other gods, as Puranic solar hymns often do. Vaishnava titles stand beside Shaiva ones: Vasudeva (25), Hrishikesha (31), Hari (85) and Narayana (96) appear with Sharva (64), a name of Shiva, and Brahman, the absolute (62). The closing name joins the two ideas as Surya Narayana. Achyuta, the unfailing one, occurs twice, as Names 9 and 80, because the stotram itself uses it in verses 2 and 15.
The stotram is the poem: twenty verses in metre, then two reward verses. Those closing verses say that one who worships the Sun with a clear mind and reads these names gains merit, long life, wealth and grain, and is freed from an ocean of grief. The namavali takes the same names out of the verse, puts each in the form of a salutation and leaves the reward verses out. A bija mantra and dhyana verse printed before some lists are not among the 108 names.

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
