What the Venkateswara Ashtothram is

The Venkateswara Ashtothram is a worship list of 108 names of Venkateswara of Tirumala, each set in the dative between Om and namah so that every name stands as a separate salutation. Other lists carry the same title; this one opens Sri Venkateshaya, Srinivasaya, Lakshmipataye, Anamayaya and ends on Jagadishvaraya, and its colophons assign it to the Brahmanda Purana. No author is named. The names fall into visible groups. Many are the familiar titles of Vishnu and Krishna, among them Keshava, Madhava, Gopala and Damodara. Names 39 and 50 to 53 count off what he carries: discus, mace, the Sharnga bow, the Nandaka sword and the conch. Names 42 to 49 are nearly all negatives in nir-, such as Nirvikalpa and Niranjana. Names 73 to 76 are built on jagat, the world. Set among these are names that belong to this hill alone, such as the hand at the hip (Name 56) and the boon to King Akasharaja (Name 61).

A Wedding Told Through the Names

No speaker or occasion is printed with this list, so its setting has to be read from the names themselves. It is the worship form of a verse stotram opening Sri Venkatesah Srinivaso Lakshmipatir Anamayah, whose closing line says that the hymn grants what is wished for to those who read or hear it with devotion. Several names point to the sacred history of the hill. Name 10 places him on Seshadri. Name 61 recalls Akasharaja, ruler of the Tondai country, who with Queen Dharani gave his daughter Padmavati in marriage to Srinivasa at Narayanapuram. Name 85 is understood as the Shravana star of the month of Kanya, the Purattasi Shravanam that Tirumala keeps as the day of his appearance. Names 90 to 93 run as a short sequence: a mind set on the hunt, a rider, a swordsman, one eager to gather wealth. According to the temple legend, Srinivasa was chasing a wild elephant when he came upon Padmavati in a royal garden, and the last of these names fits the wedding loan from Kubera that offerings at the hill are said to repay. One Sri Vaishnava commentary reads the sequence more inwardly, taking the hunt as the pursuit of suffering souls and the rider as Kalki.

Closing

इति श्रीवेङ्कटेशाष्टोत्तरशतनामावळिः संपूर्णा ॥

Thus ends the list of the one hundred and eight names of Sri Venkatesha.

The syllable people get wrong

Name 51, śārṅgapāṇaye, is often flattened to 'Sarangapani' with an extra vowel. There is no vowel between the r and the ṅ: say shaarn-ga-PAA-na-yay, with the long ā in the first syllable.

When the Venkateswara Ashtothram is chanted

Weekday. Thursday

Festival. Purattasi Shravanam at Tirumala

Questions

No. The list used inside the sanctum comes from the Varaha Purana and is a different set of names, opening Venkateshaya, Sheshadrinilayaya and ending on Srinivasaya, with many references to the seven hills. A third list is credited to the Sanatkumara Samhita. This page prints the Brahmanda Purana list, which you can recognise by its opening: Sri Venkateshaya, Srinivasaya, Lakshmipataye, Anamayaya.
Bilva and matted locks are more often linked with Shiva, so Names 69 and 72 surprise many readers. One Sri Vaishnava commentary explains the bilva through Lakshmi, with whom the tree is associated, and says such worship is offered at Tirumala. It reads jata-makuta as the hair of Rama in exile and his crown after the coronation, and notes that Pey Alvar sings of both at this hill.
It salutes the one whose hand rests at the hip, describing the left lower hand of the standing image at Tirumala. A commentary on this list gives the gesture a meaning: tradition holds that the hand shows the ocean of worldly life to be only thigh deep for those who take refuge in him. The other lower hand, in the varada pose, is echoed in Name 57, the giver of boons.
They are separate texts. The Venkateswara Stotram opening Kamalakucha Chuchuka is a poem of eleven verses by Prativadi Bhayankaram Annan, the second part of the Tirumala morning recital, and it pleads and confesses in the poet's own voice. This list has no named author and no narrative: it gives 108 separate salutations drawn from an anonymous verse stotram, and asks for nothing beyond the name itself.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
