What the Chamundeshwari Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Chamundeshwari Ashtottara, in full the Chamundeshwari Ashtottara Shatanamavali, is a list of 108 names of Chamunda as she is worshipped on Chamundi Hill above Mysuru, each name set between Om and namah. No author or Purana is named for it. Several 108-name lists of the Goddess are in use; this one is known by its opening, Shri Chamunda, Shri Mahamaya and Shrimat Simhasaneshvari, and it closes with Shrimat Tripurasundari. The names come in clusters, not as one story. Names 7 to 25 run through the familiar roll of the Goddess, with Gauri, Uma, Katyayani and Durga among them. A thread from the Devi Mahatmya follows her victories over Madhu and Kaitabha, Mahisha, Raktabija, Shumbha and Nishumbha, and reaches Name 102, the cutting of the heads of Chanda and Munda that gave Chamunda her name. Woven through are names of Lalita and the Shri Chakra, and a run of sacred seats from Jalandhara and Odyana to Shrishaila. Name 35 places her home on Mahabaladri, the old name of her hill.

Mahabaladri, the hill the names call home

No account of how this list came to be written has come down with it, and its setting is a place rather than a legend. Name 35 salutes the Goddess as she who dwells on Mahabaladri. That was the earlier name of Chamundi Hill, taken from Mahabaleshwara, the Shiva shrine regarded as the oldest temple on the summit; only later was the hill named after the Goddess herself. According to local tradition, the Skanda Purana counts it among eight hills ringing a sacred tract called Trimuta Kshetra. Devotees hold that the Goddess killed Mahishasura on this hilltop, and that the town below took its name, Mahishuru and then Mysuru, from him; Name 36 salutes her as Mahishasuramardini. The hill is also reckoned one of the eighteen great Shakti seats, the Krauncha Pitha, where tradition says the hair of Sati fell. The list remembers that set of eighteen in Name 85, and in Name 106 it names Bhramaramba of Shrishaila, another of them. Name 6 calls her the beloved of Shrikantha, which is also the name of Shiva at Nanjangud in the same district. The rulers of Mysuru held Chamundeshwari as their tutelary deity. A stairway of about a thousand steps was laid up the hill in 1659, and the great granite Nandi near the 700th step was installed in 1664.

The syllable people get wrong

In Name 102, caṇḍamuṇḍaśiraśchetryai, the visarga of śiraḥ has turned into ś before the ch of chetrī, so it is said śi-raś-che-tryai, with a light sh held just before the ch, not shira-chetryai. The closing -tryai is one syllable, not tri-yai.

When the Chamundeshwari Ashtottara Shatanamavali is chanted

Weekday. Friday

Festival. Navaratri (Mysuru Dasara) and the Fridays of Ashadha

Questions

No printing names a composer, a Purana or a tantra for this list, so it is treated as a traditional devotional text. Its contents point to South India: it names Mahabaladri, the old name of Chamundi Hill at Mysuru, calls the Goddess the beloved of Shrikantha, and borrows many epithets known from the worship of Lalita. One printing ends with a colophon calling it the 108 names of Chamundamba, Mother Chamunda, but it too gives no author.
No. The Durga list printed with the Saptashati is Shiva's speech to Parvati in the Vishvasara Tantra and runs from Sati to Brahmavadini. The Chamundeshwari list opens with Shri Chamunda and Shri Mahamaya and closes with Tripurasundari, a name the Durga list does not have. A few names are shared, such as Shivaduti and the slayer of Mahisha, but the order and most of the names differ. The Durga list has its own page at /mantra/durga-ashtottara-shatanamavali/.
The Goddess of Chamundi Hill is praised here in the language of Shri Vidya, and the list treats Chamunda and Lalita as one. Name 26 says the ten forms of Narayana sprang from her fingernails, an episode the Brahmanda Purana tells of Lalita's war with Bhanda, when she answered a weapon that revived the asuras Vishnu had slain. Mantrini and Dandini, Names 23 and 24, are the minister and the commander of Lalita's army, and Bhanda himself is crushed in Name 90.
Printings divide on this name. The text given here reads mathurapuranayika, queen of the city of Mathura. Other printings read madhurapuranayika, which would make her queen of Madhura, that is Madurai, the seat of Meenakshi. Both are real place names and both fit the grammar and the metre equally, so neither is a mistake. The Madurai reading would sit well with the list's South Indian and Lalita colouring, but the form kept here is kept here.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
