What the Durga Sahasranamam is

The Durga Sahasranamam, or Sri Durga Sahasranama Stotram, is the thousand names of Durga that the Skanda Purana sets in a conversation between Skanda and the sage Narada, beginning with the line 'Shivatha Uma Rama Shaktir Ananta'. The same list, differing only by a letter here and there, is known in the Kurma Purana as the Parvati Sahasranama, where the frame is a dialogue between Himavan and the Goddess. A viniyoga names Himavan as the seer, anushtup as the metre and Durga Bhagavati as the deity; one meditation verse then pictures her as Jaya, dark as a rain cloud, riding a lion with conch, discus, sword and trident. After it come 150 verses of names and 12 of phala shruti. The names open by calling her Shiva, Uma and Rama, pass through titles of the formless absolute such as Nishkala and Achintya, gather names of Shiva's faithful consort and the crusher of demon hosts, and close in a six-quarter verse naming her Vanadurga and Mahadurga.

How the mountain king received the names

According to the Skanda Purana, Narada asks Skanda, commander of the army of the gods, for a hymn more secret than any secret, one that removes sin and calms the troubles of the planets. Skanda answers with the story of his own mother. Born to Himavan, king of mountains, and his wife Mena, she won Shankara by long penance and went to him as his own, as a digit of the moon returns to the moon. Left behind, Himavan wasted away with grief. The sage Vasishtha came to him and told him that the daughter he mourned was the mother of the three worlds, born to him only because of his merit; she was Durga, of many forms and many names, eternal wife of the eternal Lord, and he should let go of a father's attachment. Consoled, the mountain king praised her, and Durga appeared before him. She told her father that by her grace a supreme hymn would shine in his heart, and that by worshipping her with its thousand names he would gain his wish. Then she vanished, and the thousand names rose up in Himavan's mind. Skanda says Himavan recited them to him when he asked, and that he now passes them to Narada out of affection, which is why Himavan stands as the seer of the hymn.

Phala Shruti 6

Whoever worships that Durga with these thousand names, using flowers mixed with kumkum, whatever they long for in their heart...

Phala Shruti 7

...they obtain all of it; the verse says there is no doubt about this. For one in whose mouth the thousand names of Durga always dwell...

Phala Shruti 8

...what need is there of other heaps of mantras, for one so blessed? And the house in which the book of the thousand names of Durga is kept...

Phala Shruti 9

...in that abode of auspiciousness, the verse says, no trouble from planets or spirits will arise; that house becomes a holy place that brings merit and the presence of the Goddess.

Phala Shruti 10

The verse says that one who recites this foremost hymn knows the finest of mantras, and by the Goddess's grace becomes honoured by all and happy.

Phala Shruti 11

O best of sages, this was proclaimed by the king of mountains; out of affection I have told you this most secret hymn.

Phala Shruti 12

Let it be told only to a devotee who has faith. Keep it always in your heart, for it wins the grace of the Goddess.

Closing

Thus ends the Durga Sahasranama Stotram, from the dialogue of Skanda and Narada in the Skanda Purana.

The syllable people get wrong

The opening word śivā'thomā (शिवाऽथोमा) is three words fused, śivā + atha + umā, and atha ('now') is not a name; say shi-VAA-tho-MAA, with a long vowel in each of the first and last syllables and th as an aspirated dental t, never the English 'th' of 'thin'.

Questions

Its closing line places it in the Skanda Purana, in the conversation of Skanda and Narada. Skanda is the narrator, but the names themselves are said to have arisen in the heart of Himavan, Durga's father, who later recited them to Skanda. A nearly identical list appears in the Kurma Purana under the title Parvati Sahasranama, where Himavan and the Goddess speak the introduction and the closing verses; its first line reads 'Shivoma parama shaktir' in place of 'Shivatha Uma Rama Shaktir'.
Yes. At least two Tantric texts carry the same title. One, from the Rudrayamala, is spoken by Bhairava and opens its names with 'Om Hrim Dum Jagadamba'; another, from the Tantraraja Tantra, is taught by Shiva to the Goddess with Narada as its seer and begins 'Shri Durga Durgatihara'. Neither shares this hymn's story or its opening names. The Skanda Purana hymn is easiest to recognise by its first line, 'Shivatha Uma Rama Shaktir Ananta', and by Himavan as its seer.
Because the Purana says the names were not composed but revealed to him. The verse before the viniyoga states that Durga is the deity, Himavan the seer and anushtup the metre, and that the hymn is recited to please the Goddess. In the story, Durga promises her grieving father that a hymn will shine in his heart, and the thousand names surface there after she vanishes. The phala shruti ends the same way, with Skanda reminding Narada that the king of mountains first proclaimed it.
The twelve verses after verse 150 report its fruits. The verse says that trouble from planets, spirits and the afflictions of children is calmed, that it brings ease in epidemics and victory in disputes, and that it restores love between a quarrelling husband and wife. Tradition holds that a house keeping the book of these names becomes a holy place. The last verse asks that the hymn be told only to a devotee who has faith.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
