What the Ganesha Sahasranama is

The Ganesha Sahasranamam, printed as the Sri Mahaganapati Sahasranama Stotram, is the thousand-name hymn that Ganesha speaks about himself in the Ganesha Purana, Upasana Khanda, chapter 46. Vyasa asks how the names were taught, and Brahma answers in five verses. Two meditation verses then picture Mahaganapati red and three-eyed, seated on a red lotus in a boat on a red ocean, with Siddhi and Buddhi beside him. The names open with Ganeshvara and the ganas, then widen into a cosmic body: the planets and stars are his teeth, the rivers his arms, Mount Meru his back. Later verses make him every measure of time from the instant to the kalpa, the planets from Rahu to the Sun, and every school from Sankhya and Pancharatra to the Pashupatas and the Jainas. From Verse 134 the names climb through the numbers, one to a thousand. Closing verses list the fruits and add twenty-one shorter names.

The names that armed Shiva against Tripura

The Ganesha Purana builds up to these names over ten chapters. The sage Gritsamada, a devotee of Ganesha, sneezes one day and sees before him a fierce red child, whom he raises as his son. The boy performs austerities, and Ganesha grants him three cities, of iron, silver and gold, with one condition: he will meet his end only when Shiva pierces the cities with a single arrow. Called Tripura, he drives Indra from heaven and in battle shatters thousands of Shiva's own weapons. Narada then visits the defeated Shiva, and according to the Purana Shiva sees that the obstacle came from setting out without remembering Ganesha. He turns to austerity, and Ganesha appears; Shiva praises him with all five faces, and Brahma, at Shiva's word, gives the god the name Ganesha, lord of the ganas. Ganesha tells Shiva to charge one arrow with his seed syllable, then speaks this thousand of his names, telling him to recite them when the battle begins. Shiva installs an image of Mahaganesha in a temple at a place the Purana calls Manipura. In chapter 47 Shiva dances, roars and rides out to burn the three cities. Temple tradition at Ranjangaon, one of the eight Ashtavinayaka shrines near Pune, identifies that place as its own former name, Manipur.

May Ganapati, whose feet are adorned with rows of tinkling bells, whose graceful trunk is shown in measured movement, and whose cheeks are washed by waves of ichor, by his very name quell all sin.

The syllable people get wrong

Verse 89 has ṅakāravācyo ṅākāro, names built on the rare letter ṅa (ङ). It is the 'ng' sound at the end of 'sing', placed at the start of the syllable: ngaa-KAA-ro, with no hard g and never flattened to 'na'.

When the Ganesha Sahasranama is chanted

Weekday. Tuesday

Festival. Ganesh Chaturthi (Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi)

Questions

No poet is named. In the Ganesha Purana the names are spoken by Ganesha himself to Shiva, and the Purana's preface to the hymn names Ganesha as its seer. Brahma relates the episode to Vyasa. The Purana is anonymous and is usually dated between the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries. In the eighteenth century the Sri Vidya scholar Bhaskararaya wrote a commentary on it called the Khadyota, 'the firefly', saying that a small light can still serve the devotee like the sun.
Two families circulate. The commonly chanted form, followed here, reads shivadam in Verse 1, 'which grants what is auspicious', where the Purana chapter reads shivaya, 'to Shiva'. In Verse 9 it has alampato abhiruh, 'free from greed, fearless', where some booklets print lampato bhimo. The text Bhaskararaya comments on differs in many more names and leaves out whole lines, among them the verse of crown, earrings and forest garland. There is also a separate Ganesha thousand-name hymn whose every name begins with g.
After the fruits of the thousand names, Ganesha gives a shorter list: Ganamjaya, Ganapati, Heramba, Dharanidhara, Mahaganapati, Buddhipriya, Kshipraprasadana, Amoghasiddhi, Amrita, Mantra, Chintamani, Nidhi, Sumangala, Bija, Ashapuraka, Varada, Kala, Kashyapa, Nandana, Vachasiddha and Dhundhi Vinayaka. The verse says that one who offers modakas with these names as a gift, seeking his grace, finds their wish fulfilled within a year. Several of them, such as Heramba and Dhundhi Vinayaka, also stand inside the main thousand.
From Verse 134 the hymn becomes a ladder of numbers. Ganesha is the one syllable, then two-armed and two-tusked, son of two mothers, three-eyed, four-armed and born on the fourth lunar day, five-faced, and so on through the seven seas, nine treasures, fourteen worlds and twenty-seven stars, up to the sixty-four arts. It ends in Verse 169 with the Person of a thousand heads, eyes and feet, praised by a thousand names: the hymn naming its own length.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
