What the Hanuman Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Hanuman Ashtottara Shatanamavali gives the 108 names of Hanuman, with Om before it and namah after it, so that every name stands as a salutation of its own; many printings title it the Anjaneya Ashtottara Shatanamavali, after its first name, Anjaneya, son of Anjana. The list takes its names, one at a time, from the Anjaneya Ashtottara Shatanama Stotram, a traditional hymn of twenty-one verses and a closing verse of fruit that printed collections take from the Kalika Rahasya; no author is named. The list does not follow the story in order. Names 9 to 15 address him as the one who loosens bonds and turns back hostile spells, mantras, yantras and the harm of the planets. Later names gather the Lanka mission, from the signet ring given to Sita (Name 6) and the burning of the city (Name 64) to the herb mountain carried for Lakshmana (Name 86). Name 108, the longest, places him at the feet of Rama and Sita together.

From Kishkindha to Arjuna's banner

According to tradition the list belongs to the Kalika Rahasya, and it reaches print through the Hanumatstavamanjari, an anthology of Hanuman hymns; nothing is recorded about who first arranged the names or when. What the names carry is easier to trace, because many of them point to a known episode. In Valmiki's Kishkindha Kanda, Jambavan reminds Hanuman that Anjana, a celestial nymph born as a vanara under a curse and the wife of Kesari, bore him through the wind god Vayu, and that as a child he sprang at the rising sun, taking it for a fruit. Indra's thunderbolt struck him and his jaw, the hanu, was broken, which gave him his name. Names 1, 3, 4, 44 and 75 recall that account. In the Uttara Kanda the sage Agastya tells Rama that Hanuman learned grammar by travelling from the eastern to the western mountain facing the sun, and a half-verse quoted from some recensions calls him the knower of the nine grammars who will become Brahma by Rama's grace; Names 31 and 81 echo it. Other names reach beyond Valmiki. Bhimasena's helper (Name 16) and the one who dwells on the tip of Arjuna's banner (Name 103) come from the Mahabharata, while Mahiravana (Name 78), king of the netherworld, belongs to the later regional Rama tellings.

The syllable people get wrong

The first name, āñjaneyāya, opens with a long ā: that lengthened vowel is what turns añjanā, the mother's name, into āñjaneya, 'son of Anjana', so it is said aan-ja-NAY-yaa-ya, not with the short 'an' of the mother's name. The ñ before j is the palatal nasal heard in 'injure', not a hard n.

Questions

Tulsidas wrote the Chalisa as a poem of forty chaupais, in the Hindi of his day; it narrates and praises Hanuman in rhyming verse. The Ashtottara Shatanamavali is a Sanskrit list of 108 separate titles, each spoken as om ... namah, with no narrative linking them and no named author. The list is drawn from the Kalika Rahasya through its twenty-one-verse stotram, so it belongs to the Sanskrit litany tradition rather than to the vernacular poetry of the Chalisa.
Names 11 to 15 call Hanuman the one who wards off the hostile arts of others, breaks their valour, nullifies their mantras, shatters their yantras and removes the harm of all the planets. Names 21 to 23 then say his own form is every mantra, tantra and yantra. Tradition holds Hanuman as a guardian against harm sent by others, and the stotram's closing verse says that one who reads or hears it obtains what they wish for. The names describe him; they make no promise of their own.
The names keep several forms of Hanuman side by side. Name 58, Panchavaktra, is the five-faced form, whose meditation verse in the Panchamukha Hanumat Kavacham also gives him ten arms, which Name 105, Dashabahu, matches. Name 82, Chaturbahu, is a four-armed image. Elsewhere the list keeps the monkey form of the Ramayana: the tawny eyes of Name 73, the swaying tail of Name 34 and the face like the rising sun of Name 47.
Printings agree on most names but not all. Name 78 reads Mahiravana in most lists and Maharavana in some; Name 95 is Shatakantha, the hundred-headed Ravana, in most and Dashakantha, the ten-headed, in one; Name 44 is Kesarisuta or Kesarisunu, both meaning son of Kesari. Many printings also set the verse manojavam maruta tulya vegam before the list; it is a separate meditation verse and not one of the 108.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
