What the Hanuman Vadvanal Stotra is

The Hanuman Vadvanal Stotra, printed in Sanskrit as the Sri Hanumad Vadavanala Stotram, invokes Hanuman as Vadavanala, the fire that burns beneath the ocean. Its closing colophon credits it to Vibhishana, yet the viniyoga names Sri Ramachandra as the rishi, with hram as seed, hrim as power and saum as pin. Unlike a metrical stotra, the body is a single prose mantra that printed editions divide into four sections. A dhyana verse comes first, 'manojavam', borrowed from the Rama Raksha Stotra, where it is verse 33. The first section strings together Hanuman's deeds as vocatives: burner of Lanka, bridger of the ocean, comforter of Sita, helper of Sugriva. The second turns to seed syllables and commands, ehi, 'come', and bhedaya, 'pierce'. The third names the serpents Ananta, Vasuki, Takshaka, Karkotaka and Kaliya and asks that they be made free of poison. The fourth asks that the spells of others be cut away and ends with hum phat svaha.

Why Ravana's brother is named the author

According to tradition, the Vadavanala Stotra was composed in the Treta Yuga by Vibhishana, the younger brother of Ravana, and the colophon of the printed text says so in a single line. No Purana or epic narrates the moment of composition, so the attribution rests on that colophon and on what the Ramayana tells of the two figures. In Valmiki's Sundara Kanda (sarga 52), when Ravana orders the captured Hanuman put to death, it is Vibhishana who objects that an envoy may not be killed; Ravana accepts the point and has Hanuman's tail set alight instead, the fire with which Hanuman then burns Lanka. Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas adds an earlier meeting, in which Hanuman recognises Vibhishana's house by the tulsi plant and the marks of Rama outside it. Vibhishana later crosses to Rama, is crowned king of Lanka, and is counted among the eight Chiranjivis. The title draws on a separate myth. Vadava means mare and anala fire: the Shiva Purana describes a fire of Shiva's wrath that Brahma subdued into the shape of a mare and lodged in the ocean, and another account traces the same undersea fire to the sage Aurva. Calling Hanuman by that name sets him beside a fire that the ocean itself cannot put out.

The syllable people get wrong

The title word vaḍavānala (वडवानल), as in hanumadvaḍavānala in the viniyoga, is usually shortened to 'vadvanal'; say all four syllables, va-ḍa-vā-na-la, with the tongue curled back for the retroflex ḍ and the third syllable held long.

When the Hanuman Vadvanal Stotra is chanted

Weekday. Tuesday

Questions

Vadvanal is the Hindi spoken form of the Sanskrit vadavanala, from vadava, a mare, and anala, fire. It names the fire believed to burn under the ocean, which the Shiva Purana describes as Shiva's anger shaped by Brahma into a mare's form and placed in the sea. The title gives Hanuman that name, a fire that water does not quench, and the viniyoga calls the deity Sri Vadavanala Hanuman.
The colophon reads 'iti shri vibhishana-kritam', crediting the text to Vibhishana, Ravana's brother and later king of Lanka. The attribution is traditional; no date or historical author is known, and the text is older printed devotional material in the public domain. The viniyoga separately names Sri Ramachandra as its rishi, the seer of the mantra, which is a different role from the one who is said to have composed it.
No closing phala shruti appears in the printed editions. The aims are stated at the start instead, in the viniyoga, which lists the removal of obstacles and faults, the destruction of enemies, winning over the royal household, the calming of illness, the increase of long life, health and prosperity, the wiping out of sins, and the pleasing of Sita and Rama. These are the reciter's stated intentions, not promises made by the text.
Both address Hanuman as a protector, but they are separate works. The Bajrang Baan is a poem in Awadhi verse ascribed to Tulsidas, with dohas and chaupais. The Vadavanala Stotra is Sanskrit, credited to Vibhishana, and after its opening verse runs as one long prose mantra of epithets, seed syllables and imperatives such as chhindhi, 'cut down', and uchchataya, 'drive away'. It also has a formal viniyoga naming rishi, deity, seed, power and pin, which the Bajrang Baan lacks.
