What the Kandar Alangaram is
Kandar Alangaram, also printed as Kandar Alankaram, is Arunagirinathar's book of Tamil verses that adorn Kandan, that is Murugan, with words in the way ornaments adorn an image in a shrine; alankaram means ornament. Every verse is four lines long, in the kattalai kalitturai metre. A kappu verse set at the gateway of the Tiruvannamalai temple tower opens the work, and 107 verses follow. They return again and again to a few images: the spear that split Mount Krauncha and the demon Sura, the peacock whose plumes shake Meru, the rooster banner, the anklet bells and the small red feet. Between these come blunt words to the poet's own mind, calls to share even a broken grain of rice, and a defiant voice turned on Yama. Verses 9, 10 and 61 speak of a teaching that cannot be put into words. Verse 101 gives the fruit of the reading; six more verses follow it, ending with the spear and the holy hand as 'our one true support'.
Two elephants at the Arunai tower gateway
The poem's first verse gives its own setting. The kappu takes the reader to the inner gateway of the eastern tower of the Arunachaleswarar temple at Tiruvannamalai, the poet's home town. A twentieth-century lecturer on the text explains the scene: on the southern side of that gateway sits Ganapati, before whom worshippers rap their own temples with their knuckles, and on the northern side stands Murugan. Rather than praise Ganapati directly, the poet says he found there 'the younger elephant' of the great elephant, so that a single verse honours both brothers. The same lecturer reads the knocking on the head as a lesson in humility before entering a shrine, and the sugar in Ganapati's hand as the sweetness that follows it. According to tradition, this temple is also where Arunagirinathar's life as a poet began. The accounts of his life say that after years of dissipation and illness he threw himself from a tower of the temple, and that he found himself held in Murugan's hands and was told to sing. A shrine in the temple known as Gopuratthu Ilaiyanar, the young one of the tower, is linked to that rescue. The poem looks back on such a moment in the poet's own voice: verse 24 recalls what the Lord once spoke into his ear, and verse 100 says the prison of birth was thrown open.

Did Brahma not create four thousand eyes, so that on this earth we might go and see and worship the Lord of Tiruchengodu, with its fields full of fish and its groves, the nephew of Vishnu, son of the Dancer, the God above the gods, the God of true knowledge?

It is very good to praise the Lord of Tiruchengodu, rich with young areca palms and trees, the nephew of dark Vishnu, who carried off the deer-daughter Valli, the rooster-handed Lord who fought the great Sura so that the heavens might live, the Lord of the warlike spear.

கந்தர் அலங்காரம் முற்றிற்று
kantar alaṅkāram muṟṟiṟṟu
Thus ends the Kandar Alankaram.
The syllable people get wrong
In the closing line, அலங்காரம் is written alaṅkāram in ISO 15919, but in Tamil a k after the nasal ṅ is voiced, so say 'a-lang-GAA-ram' with a soft g and a long middle aa; that is why the title is spelled both Alankaram and Alangaram. In the same way கந்தர் (kantar) is said 'KAN-dar', not 'kan-thar'.
When the Kandar Alangaram is chanted
Weekday. Tuesday
Questions
Have your chart read before you decide
Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
- Over 30 years in the Guru–Sishya Parampara, from the age of five
- He reads every chart himself — 60 minutes, one to one, never delegated
- Charts are read only between sunrise and sunset, following tradition
