What the Lakshmi Sahasranamam is

The Lakshmi Sahasranamam, printed as the Sri Lakshmi Sahasranama Stotram, gathers one thousand and eight names of Mahalakshmi into a hymn that its colophon places in the Sanatkumara Samhita of the Skanda Purana. Its preface names Anandakardama, Chiklita and Indirasuta as its seers, gives the anushtubh as its metre and Vishnumaya as its power. Three dhyana verses first picture her as Padma, holding lotuses, with the full-moon face of the moon's sister. Then 154 verses of names follow, opening with nityagata, 'she who has come eternally'. The list is unusually wide: verse 2 calls her Mahakali and Sarasvati in one breath, later verses add Durga, Chamunda, Kamakshi and the rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Narmada, and verse 153 closes on Sri Vidya, the sixteen-syllable mantra and the Sri Yantra. Verse 154 is the Devi Mahatmya's Sarvamangala verse, and fifteen closing verses carry her promise to the gods.

Twelve yogis ask for a poverty-ending teaching

The hymn is set inside two conversations. In the outer one, a listener asks the sage Gargya for the thousand and eight names of Mahalakshmi. Gargya answers by recalling a scene: twelve yogis approached Sanatkumara, the eternally youthful son of Brahma, who sat shining like the twelve suns. They told him that people everywhere grieve for lack of means, and asked which teaching destroys poverty, which brings knowledge of Brahman, and which is the essence of all teachings. Sanatkumara praised the question and said he would give them the names once spoken by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Indra. Verse 13 of the list answers the yogis directly with the name Daridryadhvamsini, 'destroyer of poverty'. The closing verses then tell where the names first worked. Brahma, Rudra and the gods, the text says, had lost their splendour and stood before her stripped of strength. Pleased with their praise, the wife of Vishnu showed herself, and her side-glances, bright as a million autumn moons, restored them. Mahalakshmi then spoke the promise the hymn is known for and vanished, and each god regained his place and his victory. Sanatkumara blessed the twelve yogis and left. The closing verses call the hymn a secret to be guarded.

How much more for one who chants them under a rule, with me alone as refuge; like a mother to her calf, in compassion I will nourish him day and night.

Phala Shruti 6

For those who praise my names in the world nothing they wish for is out of reach; by my grace all of you will gain what each desires.

Phala Shruti 7

For one who has lost the Vaishnava way, who has broken my vows and lacks devotion and surrender, even the praise of my names is worthy of honour.

Phala Shruti 8

Therefore, free of those faults and of sin, one should chant my thousand and eight names every day with reverence.

Phala Shruti 9

Even one who is the very son of misfortune, ill-fated or idle, without effort, foolish, disabled or fallen,

Phala Shruti 10

will surely gain good fortune, by my grace alone. O gods, I soon long to grant boons to the one who chants; to those who remember me as Lakshmi I surely give every desired thing.

Phala Shruti 11

Sanatkumara said: Having said this, Lakshmi, Vishnu's power and a portion of the Lord, vanished. The gods regained their merit of sacrifice and good works, their portion and what they had wished for,

Phala Shruti 12

and each regained his own place, enjoyment and victory. This same thousand names of Lakshmi I now declare; O yogis, recite it, and the verse says you will quickly gain what you have in mind.

Phala Shruti 13

Gargya said: Having said this, Sanatkumara, the lord of yogis and treasure of compassion, blessed the twelve yogis and quickly departed.

Phala Shruti 14

Therefore this secret should be guarded and chanted with care, on the eighth, fourteenth and ninth lunar days and on Fridays,

Phala Shruti 15

and especially on full-moon and new-moon days and at the junctions of the month; or it may be chanted in the daily rites, and the verse says the chanter gains every wish.

The syllable people get wrong

In verse 3, hṛllekhā (हृल्लेखा), a name for the seed syllable Hrim, is often said 'hri-lekha' with one l. The ṛ is a short vowel and the l is doubled, so it is hṛl-lekhā, the first l closing one syllable and the second opening the next, with a long final ā.

When the Lakshmi Sahasranamam is chanted

Questions

The version printed in most editions ends with a colophon placing it in the Sanatkumara Samhita of the Skanda Purana, and the 1929 Madras Stotraratnakara prints it under that heading. It is not the only thousand-name hymn to Lakshmi. A separate Mahalakshmi Sahasranama is found in the Brahma Purana, in the chapter describing Kashmir, and another stotram opens with the words padmanane padmakare. The Skanda Purana text is recognised by its first name line, nityagatanantanitya.
The text calls itself namnam sashtasahasram, 'a thousand names with eight', and Mahalakshmi repeats that figure in her promise. Counting the names in the 154 verses is harder, because many lines can be split in more than one way and some names recur. P.R. Ramachander, who translated it into English, reached 1,033 names even after merging obvious repeats, and noted that a few short prayers to Lakshmi sit inside the list.
The fifteen verses after the names form the phala shruti. They begin by retelling how Brahma, Rudra and the gods praised her and saw her. In the fourth, Mahalakshmi says that if anyone recites her thousand and eight names even once, even carelessly, she dwells in that family as long as the moon and stars last. Tradition reads this as her own word, and later verses say that even one born to misfortune, idle or fallen, will gain good fortune by her grace alone.
The Lalitha Sahasranamam comes from the Brahmanda Purana, is taught by Hayagriva to Agastya and follows Lalita from her rising to her battle and the Sri Chakra. The Lakshmi Sahasranamam comes from the Skanda Purana, is taught by Sanatkumara to twelve yogis and has no battle narrative. It does meet the Sri Vidya tradition at the end: verse 153 calls Lakshmi the sixteen-syllable Shrividya who lives in the city of the Sri Yantra.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
