What the Narasimha 108 Names is

The Narasimha 108 Names is the list of 108 names of Narasimha, the man-lion form of Vishnu, each set between Om and namah so that it stands as one salutation. No author or Purana is named for it; the names follow a verse stotram opening 'Narasimho mahasimho divyasimho mahabalah', recast one by one. Other lists share the title, and this one is known by its opening, Narasimha, Mahasimha, Divyasimha, and its last name, Prahladapalaka. Its names are built in runs on a shared word: lion at the start, flame in Names 23 to 25, bhadra (auspicious) in 37 to 40, jagat (the world) in 92 to 95. Fierce titles such as Karala share the list with tender ones such as Bhaktavatsala, and Vishnu's own names, Achyuta and Purushottama, meet titles usually heard for Shiva. Yogananda, Name 12, is also the name of one of the nine shrines at Ahobilam. Near the end the list turns to Nirguna and Paramatman before returning to Lakshmi and Prahlada.

The pillar episode, told name by name

These names have no composition story of their own. Their setting is archana, the offering in which a tulasi leaf or a flower is laid down at each name, and what they carry instead is the episode itself, scattered through the list in fragments that are easiest to follow beside the seventh book of the Bhagavata Purana. Stambhaja, 'born from the pillar', comes early, at Name 7. Kolahala, Name 15, is the roar: the Bhagavata says the sound broke out from inside the pillar as if the shell of the universe had cracked, and that it reached the world of Brahma. Nakhastra and Vajranakha turn to the claws, and the text is exact about where they were used, with Hiranyakashipu held across the thighs at the door of the assembly hall. Name 81 packs the date into one compound. The closing names hold the aftermath. In the same account the gods could not bear to approach the form, and even Lakshmi, sent forward, held back from a shape she had never seen or heard of. In the list she stands at his side in Name 105, Lakshmi Narasimha, and the sequence ends three names later on Prahladapalaka, so that it stops at the child who was protected and not at the killing.

Closing

इति श्री नृसिंहाष्टोत्तरशतनामावली ।

Thus ends the list of the one hundred and eight names of Sri Narasimha.

The syllable people get wrong

In niṭilākṣāya (Name 27, 'with an eye on the forehead') the ṭ is retroflex, said with the tongue curled back, so it is not the soft dental t of 'nitila'. The vowel after it is short and the next long: ni-ṭi-lāk-ṣā-ya.

When the Narasimha 108 Names is chanted

Weekday. Thursday

Festival. Narasimha Jayanti, Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi

Questions

These titles are usually heard for Shiva, and here they are given to the man-lion without any change of subject. Name 6 reads 'the great god', Name 34 'ever auspicious', and Name 56 Sharva, 'who ends all things'. The same overlap is found in the thousand names of Vishnu, where Sharva and Shiva both stand. Bhairavadambara and Aghora, Names 50 and 21, have a similar colour.
Name 81 is a calendar reference folded into one word. Vaishakha is the lunar month, shukla the bright fortnight, and bhuta here stands for its fourteenth day; uttha means 'arisen'. The name therefore salutes him as the one who appeared on that date, the same tithi kept as Narasimha Jayanti. It is the only name in this list that gives a date.
It is the same sequence in a different form, with a few words read differently. The stotram is a poem of fourteen verses that runs the names together in the nominative, and the namavali here separates them into single salutations. Some printings put Lakshmi in the title because of Name 105. One printing of the stotram ends with a further verse saying that whoever reads these names with devotion gains all they wish; the list has no such verse.
Name 19 is read as 'him of the five faces', and five-faced is the word's plain sense. Panchanana is also an ordinary Sanskrit word for a lion, which dictionaries explain from the lion's wide-open mouth, so the title suits the man-lion in a second way. The next name in the list is the supreme Brahman.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
