What the Navagraha Beej Mantras is

The Navagraha Beej Mantras are the nine tantric seed-syllable mantras of the planetary deities, one for each graha in order from the Sun to Ketu. All nine share one pattern: Om, three bijas built on a single consonant cluster with the vowels aa, ee and au, the syllable sah, the graha's name in the dative, and namah. Jyotisha remedy texts print them as a table with the japa that completes each one. The remedy texts give Surya, lord of Sunday, 7,000; Chandra, Monday, 11,000; Mangala, Tuesday, 10,000; Budha, Wednesday, 9,000; Guru, Thursday, 19,000; Shukra, Friday, 16,000; and Shani, Saturday, 23,000. Rahu and Ketu, the two nodes of the Moon, rule no weekday; for them the texts give 18,000 and 17,000. The same figures appear in the graha-shanti chapter of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, set there against each graha's Vedic verse. The remedy books carry them over to the bija form, and one adds that in the Kali Yuga the japa is taken four times over.

Parashara's answer on appeasing the grahas

The counts printed beside these mantras trace back to a dialogue in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Near the close of the work the sage Maitreya asks Parashara to describe, for the good of all people, how a troublesome planet may be appeased. Parashara answers that he has already set out the names and natures of the grahas, and that the joys and sorrows of every creature depend on them. He then lays out a full rite. An image of each graha is to be made of its own material, copper for the Sun, crystal for the Moon, gold for Mercury and Jupiter, silver for Venus and iron for Saturn, or else the nine are drawn in their colours on cloth and placed in their own directions. Each is pictured in turn: the Sun on a lotus in a chariot of seven horses, Mars on a ram, Mercury on a lion, Saturn on a donkey. Flowers, cloth, metal and grain of each graha's colour are offered and then given away, and only after this worship does Parashara name each graha's Vedic mantra and the number of its recitations. He ends by saying that Brahma granted the planets a boon to favour those who honour them. Later tantric and remedy manuals kept his numbers and set the short bija forms beside them.

The syllable people get wrong

In hrauṃ (ह्रौं) the vowel is the diphthong au, said like the 'ow' in 'how' and closed on the nasal; it is often flattened to 'hrom'. The h and r are sounded together as one cluster, never split into 'hu-rau'.

Questions

A bija has no dictionary meaning; it is a seed sound that stands for the deity. Each graha has its own consonant cluster: hr for the Sun, shr for the Moon, kr for Mars, br for Mercury, gr for Jupiter, dr for Venus, pr for Saturn, bhr for Rahu and sr for Ketu. The cluster is sounded three times with long aa, long ee and au, closed by sah. The words after it, such as suryaya namah, simply mean salutation to that graha.
Not in this form. The graha-shanti chapter of that text names a Vedic verse for each planet, such as the verse beginning 'Aa krishnena rajasa' for the Sun, with a number of recitations. The bija mantras are traditional tantric formulas of no known author. Jyotisha remedy manuals print them alongside the same numbers, which is why the two are often spoken of together.
Both are other names of the same graha in the dative. Chandramas is an old Vedic name of the Moon, and Shani is the short form of Shanaishchara, the slow-moving one. Most printings read chandraya and shanaishcharaya, as given here, while some remedy books keep the other names; the sense does not change. One Vedic prayoga also gives different bijas for Jupiter, Saturn and Ketu, but it belongs to a separate practice.
The Navagraha Stotram attributed to Vyasa gives each graha a descriptive verse, beginning with the Sun red as the hibiscus. Each graha's Gayatri is a three-line verse in the Gayatri metre with vidmahe, dhimahi and prachodayat. The beej mantra is neither a verse nor metrical: it is a string of seed syllables followed by the graha's name and a salutation, which is why each one is so short.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
