What the Shanmuga Kavasam is

The Shanmuga Kavasam, also written Shanmuga Kavacham, is a Tamil armour-hymn to Murugan in his six-faced form, composed in 1891 by Pamban Kumaragurudasa Swamigal, known as Pamban Swamigal. Its thirty four-line verses are in the six-foot asiriya viruttam metre and form an acrostic: the first twelve open on the twelve Tamil vowels and the other eighteen on the consonants, in order from a to the final na. The sequence dresses the body. Verses 1 to 9 set a named form of the Lord over each part from the crown to the soles, giving the knees, shins, ankles and heels to the Lords of Swamimalai, Tiruchendur, Tirupparankundram and Pazhamudircholai. Verses 10 to 21 turn the vel against spirits and sorcery, hurled weapons, hostile men, snakes and wild animals, the nine planets, a long roll of named diseases and the messengers of Yama. Verses 22 to 29 cover every place, the eight directions, daily acts, the ages of life and the watches of day and night, and verse 30 carries the poet's signature.

Sung at Rameswaram, recalled in Madras

A prose note printed after the hymn in the author's lifetime dates it to the day: Pamban Swamigal sang the thirty verses at Rameswaram on a Sunday, the 22nd of Karthigai in the Kara year, Kali 4993, late in 1891. He was then a householder running the family business; he took sannyasa only in 1895. The note says he composed it to be freed from a trouble that had come upon him, and a life of the poet printed with a later edition adds that he kept it as his own daily recitation. The same note names the moments it was meant to cover: a road at night, a forest, sickness, sudden danger, falling asleep and the hour of death. It is one of many Tamil hymns Pamban Swamigal wrote to Murugan, and it was printed during his lifetime in a small collection of his shorter works, which gave the date and place of its composition. The Sri Kandaswamy temple in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, has hosted a day-long recital of the hymn.

சண்முககவச முற்றிற்று

Thus ends the Shanmuga Kavacham.

The syllable people get wrong

In verse 14, ஞானவேல் (ñāṉavēl, the spear of wisdom) is often said "gnanavel" with a hard g. It opens on the palatal nasal ñ, like the ny in canyon, with a long ā, and the ṉ is the alveolar n made with the tongue tip on the ridge behind the teeth.

When the Shanmuga Kavasam is chanted

Weekday. Tuesday

Questions

No. The Shanmuga Kavacham is the work of Pamban Kumaragurudasa Swamigal (c. 1850-1929), a Murugan devotee born at Rameswaram whose samadhi is at Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai. It is a compact poem of thirty four-line viruttam verses arranged on the Tamil alphabet. The Kanda Sashti Kavacham is an earlier hymn by Devaraya Swamigal, a long run of couplets centred on Tiruchendur and the Sashti battle. Both guard the body limb by limb, but their wording, order and scope are entirely different.
The poet built the hymn on the Tamil alphabet. Verses 1 to 12 open on the twelve vowels in order, from a to au; verses 13 to 30 take the eighteen consonants from ka to the final na. Five of those consonants cannot begin a Tamil word, so verses 18 and 27 to 30 open on i and set the letter second (inakkamil, izhandu). The letters also enter the images: verse 14 likens the vel's embrace to the curve of nga, and verse 23 shapes a trident like ya.
Verse 30 names two poets. The master who sang the Anubhuti is Arunagirinathar, the fifteenth-century author of the Kandar Anubhuti, and the verse asks that his Lord guard the reciter. The servant who lovingly spoke this hymn is the author himself: Kumaragurudasa means servant of Kumara the guru, and the line is his signature. The same verse also calls on the Lord who came as a merchant to join his devotees, and on Saravanabhava for times alone and in company.
The body verses read like a pilgrimage through the six Arupadai Veedu. Tiruttani guards the eyes in verse 2; Swamimalai, Tiruchendur, Tirupparankundram and Pazhamudircholai guard the knees, shins, ankles and heels in verse 8; and Palani guards the soles in verse 9. Verse 2 opens with the Lord of Kailasa, and among the directions verse 24 sends the battle spear of the Lord of Kathirkamam, the Murugan shrine in Sri Lanka, to guard the south.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
