What the Subramanya Sahasranamam is

The Subramanya Sahasranamam, in full the Subrahmanya Sahasranama Stotram, is the hymn of a thousand names of the six-faced son of Shiva; its closing line places it in the Skanda Mahapurana and calls it the Shanmukha Sahasranama. The form printed here begins its names with acintyashakti, he of inconceivable power. Fourteen verses of dialogue come first, then two dhyana stanzas, one picturing six crowns bright as the rising sun, the other twelve items held in his hands and a many-coloured peacock as his mount. The 131 name verses follow, which Brahma describes in Verse 11 as set in the order of the alphabet: a at Verse 15, ka at Verse 36, and so on to ksha at Verses 142 to 145. The name Subrahmanya itself comes only once, heading the sa names at Verse 130, just after Verses 127 to 129 gather the names built on six. Three phala shruti verses and the closing line end the text.

From Naimisha Forest to Brahma's Throne

According to the hymn's own opening, the sages of the Naimisha forest come to Suta as guests and ask for a guest's due in the form of knowledge. Their concern is the Kali age, when minds are stained, and they want to know which hymn frees people from the bonds of sin and takes away sorrow, poverty and illness. Suta answers that the teaching is not his own. He is passing on what Brahma, the Self-born, once told Narada. The sages press him for that very conversation, and the scene moves to Brahma on a divine throne, praised by all the gods. Narada bows with his whole body, stands with joined palms, and asks for the supreme hymn of the Six-faced One. He appeals to Brahma as a son would, asking for it out of a father's love. Brahma calls it a king of hymns strung on the letters of the alphabet, and the meditation verses and the names follow. The reader therefore hears the names at one remove, Suta repeating Brahma. The printed closing line adds one more voice, calling the hymn spoken by Ishvara and set in the dialogue of Brahma and Narada. That line names the Skanda Mahapurana and gives no chapter.

In one sentence I will say it: the verse says this grants what is wished for. Therefore, O Brahmin, the wise should repeat it with discipline and with all their being.

Closing

॥ इति श्रीस्कान्दे महापुराणे ईश्वरप्रोक्ते ब्रह्मनारदसंवादे षण्मुखसहस्रनामस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Thus ends the hymn of the thousand names of the Six-faced One, told by Ishvara in the dialogue of Brahma and Narada, in the great Skanda Purana.

The syllable people get wrong

The name subrahmaṇyaḥ in Verse 130 is often flattened to "Subramanya": the h is sounded before the m (su-brah-mun-yah), and the ṇ is made with the tongue tip curled back.

Questions

The closing line assigns this text to the Skanda Mahapurana, as told by Ishvara in a dialogue of Brahma and Narada. It is one of several thousand-name lists for Subrahmanya. Another opens subrahmanyah sureshanah and is tied to Markandeya; a longer alphabetical recension runs to 1113 names; a further list belongs to the Siddha Nagarjuna Tantra. This one is known by its opening names, acintyashaktir anaghah, at Verse 15.
Matrika means the letters of the Sanskrit alphabet and mala a garland, so the names are strung letter by letter. Rare letters force unusual coinages: every name in Verse 62 opens with tanka, and Verse 64 opens with the dhakka drum. Where tha would stand, Verses 67 and 68 use words in st and sth, and the nasals that begin almost no words are passed over.
Verse 16 calls him son of the Mountain's daughter, Verse 19 born of fire, Verse 36 son of the Krittikas, Verse 43 son of the Ganga, Verse 124 born in the reeds and Verse 126 son of six mothers. These follow one birth account: in the Skanda Purana telling, Shiva's sparks pass through Agni and the Ganga to the Saravana lake, the Krittikas raise six boys, and Parvati joins them into one.
Phala Shruti 1 to 3 say that whoever recites or hears the names with a devoted mind is at once freed from sins of mind, speech and body, and that the names add to life span, steadiness and strength. Brahma then sums it up in one sentence: the hymn grants what is wished for. Verses 13 and 14 make similar claims earlier. These are the text's own statements, reported as it gives them.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
