What the Hanuman Sahasranamam is

The Hanuman Sahasranamam, also called the Hanuman Sahasranama, praises Hanuman in a thousand names set out as Sanskrit verse rather than as a numbered list. The form printed here opens with the names hanuman shriprado vayuputro rudro nayo'jarah. Three dhyana verses come first, picturing Hanuman glowing like molten gold, the ocean shrunk to a cow's hoofprint beneath him and Ravana's ten faces dragged down by his left hand. Then follow 128 verses of names and six verses of phala shruti. The names move freely between the Ramayana and theology. Beside the burning of Lanka and the life restored to Lakshmana, they call Hanuman Rudra, Sharva and Sadyojata, set all ten avatars of Vishnu in a single verse, and describe him as the Brahman reached through the teaching neti neti, not this, not this. No poet is named; the opening frame gives Sri Ramachandra as the seer of the hymn.

Rama's thousand names at Lohagiri

The printed text sets the hymn inside a short frame narrated by Valmiki. The rishis ask him what Rama did when he reached Lohagiri, worn down by his separation from Sita. Valmiki relates that Hanuman came quickly, fell at Rama's feet and spoke with folded hands, saying that the sight of those feet had made his life complete. Rama told him that someone had carried Vaidehi away while he was chasing Marica. When the rishis ask for the mantra Rama then used, Valmiki gives a root mantra and the thousand names, and says that remembering them helped Hanuman win Sita back and gave Vibhishana a kingdom free of enemies. The frame reverses the usual direction of praise: here the god honours his servant, which is why the viniyoga names Sri Ramachandra as the seer, Anushtubh as the metre and Hanuman, the great Rudra, as the deity. One recension adds a seven-verse coda after the names, in which Hanuman, pleased, tells Rama he recognises him as the Brahman on whom devotees meditate, asks what task awaits him and accepts the charge to find Sita. Some popular prints connect the hymn with the Ananda Ramayana, a later retelling of Rama's story traditionally ascribed to Valmiki, but the standard printed text names no parent work.

Closing

॥ श्री आञ्जनेयसहस्रनामस्तोत्रं हनुमत्सहस्रनामस्तोत्रं च सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Thus ends the Sri Anjaneya Sahasranama Stotram, also called the Hanumat Sahasranama Stotram.

The syllable people get wrong

In Dhyanam 2, goṣpadīkṛtavārāśiṃ ('who made the ocean a cow's hoofprint') begins with goṣ-, a retroflex sh said with the tongue curled back, and kṛ is the vowel ṛ, close to a short 'kri': gosh-pa-dee-kri-ta-vaa-raa-shim, never 'go-sa-padi'.

When the Hanuman Sahasranamam is chanted

Weekday. Tuesday

Festival. Hanuman Jayanti

Questions

No author is recorded, and the hymn is handed down as a traditional, anonymous stotra. Its own frame has Valmiki tell the rishis how Rama praised Hanuman with these names, and the viniyoga names Sri Ramachandra as its seer. Popular prints often link it to the Ananda Ramayana, but the standard printed text does not name a source work. Other Hanuman sahasranamas, such as those placed in the Rudrayamala and the Sudarshana Samhita, are separate texts with different names.
The viniyoga names the deity as Hanuman, the great Rudra, and the names follow that lead: Verse 3 calls him Shiva and Sharva, and Verse 121 Sadyojata, with the radiance of Shambhu. Yet Verse 88 lists the ten avatars of Vishnu, from the Boar to Kalki, and Verse 89 adds Nandi, Bhringi, Chandi and Ganesha. Tradition holds Hanuman to be a form of Rudra in Rama's service, and the hymn treats every deity it names as present in him.
The six verses after Verse 128, beginning idam namasahasram tu, form the phala shruti. They say that daily recitation sweeps away a flood of sorrows and makes prosperity last, that rulers and ministers come to the reciter's side, and that those who chant at the root of a peepal tree have no fear of enemies. They also speak of relief from fever and other illness. These are the verses' own claims, reported as the text gives them.
The very first verse calls him gramavasa, the one who dwells in the village, and janashraya, refuge of the people. Verse 8 calls him the boundary of the village, Verse 29 guardian of towns and villages, and Verse 43 the one present in every village. The hymn sets these homely titles of a guardian of settlements directly beside names that speak of him as the supreme Brahman, reached only by the teaching neti neti.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
