What the Lalitha Ashtottara Shatanamavali is

The Lalitha Ashtottara Shatanamavali, the 108 names of Lalita opening 'Om rajatachala shringagra madhyasthayai', seats the goddess on the peak of the silver mountain Kailasa rather than on Meru, where her thousand names place her. Each name is one long compound in the feminine dative, framed by Om and closed by 'namo namah'. Names 1 to 7 give her home, her birth into Himavan's line, her place as the left half of Shankara and her oneness with the fifteen-syllable mantra. Names 8 to 30 describe her from the jewelled crown to ruby-red feet, with Shiva's sacred ash on her forehead and the marriage thread tied by Girisha at her throat. Names 31 to 50 gather her court of gods and sages about the Sri Chakra. Names 51 to 83 turn inward, to the heart lotus, the witness of waking, dream and sleep, and the sixteen-syllable mantra. Names 84 to 91 recall her battles, and the last names return to Shiva, ending with the great goddess eager for Mahadeva.

Bhanda's war, told in eight names

No legend of composition is attached to this list, and no printing names its author. What it carries instead is a story pressed into names. According to the Lalitopakhyana of the Brahmanda Purana, Shiva burned Kama, the god of love, to ash. Chitrakarma, one of Shiva's attendants, shaped a figure from the ashes, and under Shiva's gaze it came alive as the demon Bhanda. Armed with boons, Bhanda brought even Indra under his rule, until the gods held a great fire sacrifice and Lalita rose from its flames. Name 47 remembers that moment as a fair body born from the fire-pit of consciousness. The war that followed fills Names 84 to 91: Lalita with the circle of the Mothers, the breaking of Bhanda's strength, and the cutting of his head. In the Purana's account of the battle, Durga emerges on her lion when Lalita laughs and destroys an asura host that includes Mahishasura, and the list folds Mahishasura, with Chanda, Munda and Nishumbha of the Devi Mahatmya, into Lalita's own victory. Name 36 carries the sequel: her side-glance gives birth to Ananga, the bodiless Kama, as her thousand names call her the herb that revived him after Shiva's eye burned him. Tellings differ on detail; some have Bhanda rise straight from the ashes left by Shiva's fire.

Closing

॥ इति श्रीललिताष्टोत्तरशतनामावलिः सम्पूर्णा ॥

Thus ends the list of the 108 names of Shri Lalita.

The syllable people get wrong

In Name 86, śiraśchedanipuṇāyai, the visarga of śiraḥ (head) turns into ś before cheda (cutting), so say 'shi-rash-che-da', with a clear sh before the ch, never 'shira-chheda'.

When the Lalitha Ashtottara Shatanamavali is chanted

Weekday. Friday

Festival. Lalita Panchami, the fifth day of Navaratri

Questions

It means 'Om, to her who stands at the centre of the summit of the silver mountain, salutations.' Rajata is silver and achala, 'the unmoving one', is a mountain; together they name Kailasa, the home of Shiva. Shringa-agra is the tip of the peak and madhya-stha is one who stands in the middle. Her thousand names set Lalita on the middle peak of Meru, so this list signals with its first word that it sees her as Shiva's consort on his own mountain.
No printing names an author, and the list is not taken from the Brahmanda Purana, the source of the Lalitha Sahasranamam and the Lalitha Trishati. It is a free-standing namavali. A palm-leaf copy that begins with rajatachala survives in a south Indian manuscript collection, and printings from the early twentieth century onward give the same names in the same order, so the list is treated as traditional and anonymous.
The names themselves carry these stories. Name 2 says she sanctifies the great family line of Himavan, Name 75 credits her with breaking Daksha's sacrifice, and Name 104 has her appear in the form of Daksha's daughter. Name 88 has her cut down Chanda, Munda, Nishumbha and the other demons, Name 89 punish Raktaksha, Raktajihva and their kind, and Name 90 subdue the might of Mahishasura's arms. Chanda, Munda, Nishumbha and Mahishasura are the demons of the Devi Mahatmya.
Aim, Hrim and Shrim are bija syllables of the Sri Vidya tradition. Some printings set them once at the head of the list, and one prints them before every single name. Every printing closes each name with 'namo namah', a doubled salutation, where the 108-name lists of many other deities end in a single 'namah'. This page gives each name as Om, the name, and namo namah, and leaves the bija syllables out of the list.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
