What the Lalitha Trishati is

The Lalitha Trishati, printed as the Sri Lalitha Trishati Stotram, is a hymn of 300 names of Lalita Tripurasundari, the goddess at the centre of Sri Vidya worship. It belongs to the Lalitopakhyana part of the Brahmanda Purana's Uttara Khanda, where Hayagriva teaches it to the sage Agastya after the thousand names. A meditation verse first pictures her rosy red, holding a sugarcane bow and flower arrows. Then come 59 verses in the anushtubh metre whose order follows the fifteen syllables of her Panchadashi mantra: twenty names open with each syllable, beginning with Ka in verse 1. The mantra falls into three groups that each close on Hrim, so three runs of names are built on that syllable. The last run, verses 54 to 59, places her inside Hrim as a pearl in its oyster, a lamp in its courtyard, a sword in its sheath. Verses 47 to 50 are given wholly to her bond with Kameshvara, her consort.

Three years of silence before the names

The Purva Pithika, the 28-verse introduction printed before the hymn in most editions, opens just after Agastya has received the thousand names. He tells Hayagriva that he has heard everything worth hearing, yet his mind is still unsatisfied, and asks for the full meaning and whatever remains to be known. Hayagriva, remembering an instruction from Lalita, will not answer. According to the text, teacher and pupil stay in that standoff for three years while onlookers marvel at it. Lalita then appears with Kameshvara. She recalls that her sixteen-syllable vidya must not be handed out lightly, but she names Agastya and his wife Lopamudra as her devotees and commands that the names be revealed. Hayagriva raises Agastya up and declares that no devotee of Lalita in the three worlds equals him. He calls the coming hymn more secret than the thousand names, says its 300 names are arranged by the syllables of the fifteen-syllable mantra beginning with Ka, and asks Agastya to listen with a one-pointed mind, since every name is both a name and a mantra. Within the hymn, verse 50 calls her Kamakotinilaya, the one who dwells in Kamakoti, the seat of the goddess at Kanchipuram.

The syllable people get wrong

In hrīṃkāra, which opens verse 17 and nearly every line of verses 39 to 42 and 55 to 59, the h is breathed before the r as one cluster, and the nasal of hrīṃ shades into 'ng' before the k: say hreeng-KAA-ra. The common slip 'reem-kara' drops the h and shortens the long aa.

When the Lalitha Trishati is chanted

Weekday. Friday

Festival. Navaratri archana of Lalita

Questions

The hymn names no human author. The Brahmanda Purana presents the 300 names as a teaching held in Lalita's own keeping, which Hayagriva, the horse-headed form of Vishnu, passes to Agastya only on her command. A Sanskrit commentary on the Trishati is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya and appears in collected editions of his works. Some students of the tradition question that attribution, pointing out that the order of the mantra the hymn follows differs from the one usually linked with Shankara.
Hrim is the closing syllable of each of the three groups in the fifteen-syllable mantra, so it occurs three times and claims sixty of the 300 names. The first run, from verse 17, states plainly that Hrim is her seed, mantra and sign. The later runs turn into a chain of images: she is the flame in the fire-pit of Hrim, the swan in its lake, the parrot in its cage, the Ganga flowing from its Himalaya.
It sits in the Uttara Pithika, the 58-verse closing section that editions print separately after the 300 names. Hayagriva first explains which syllables of the mantra belong to Shiva, which to Shakti, and that Hrim belongs to both, then describes the Sri Chakra as their joined body. The section says the names give long life, learning, fame, skill in poetry and the fulfilment of wishes, and it forbids handing the text to the faithless or deceitful.
Both forms are in use. The stotram strings the 300 names into 59 verses for continuous recitation, while the namavali sets each name apart in the dative with namah, as in kakararupayai namah, so that a flower or a pinch of kumkum can be offered at every name. At Lalita shrines such as Devipuram in Andhra Pradesh, the namavali is used for kumkum archana during Navaratri, where it is announced as the Sarvapurtikari Stava, the hymn that completes everything.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
