Hayagriva teaching Agastya and Lopamudra, Lalita in the vision above
Mantra · 183 verses, 1,000 names of Lalita, from her rising to the Sri Chakra

Lalitha Sahasranamam

Also known as Lalita Sahasranama

In Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English — with the meaning of every word, and the one syllable most people pronounce wrongly.

What the Lalitha Sahasranamam is

The Lalitha Sahasranamam addresses Lalita Tripurasundari, the goddess of the Sri Vidya tradition, through a thousand names. It stands in the Lalitopakhyana, the Lalita narrative in the Uttara-khanda of the Brahmanda Purana, as part of a dialogue in which Hayagriva instructs the sage Agastya. The text on this page has four dhyana verses for visualising her, then 183 verses in the anushtubh metre that resolve into exactly 1,000 names. The verses move in a deliberate order. Verse 1 has her rise from the fire-pit of consciousness for the work of the gods. Verses 4 to 20 describe her from the flowers in her hair to the anklets on her feet. Verses 24 to 33 retell her war against Bhandasura. Verses 34 to 36 map her body onto the three sections of her root mantra, and verses 38 to 40 trace her rise through the chakras. The rest move between her qualities and her formless nature, ending on the name Lalitambika.

Names composed for a goddess's own court

The Brahmanda Purana frames the hymn as a teaching withheld and then given. Hayagriva, the horse-headed form of Vishnu, had already told Agastya the long account of Lalita and many of her names. According to the text's opening section, he held back the thousand names because Sri Vidya is not to be taught to one who has not asked for it. When Agastya asked why he had been passed over, Hayagriva agreed to teach it. He then explains where the names came from. Lalita herself called the eight Vagdevis, the goddesses of speech named Vasini, Kameshvari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayini, Modini, Sarveshvari and Kaulini, and asked them to compose a hymn of her names. They recited it in her court, with the gods assembled before her throne, so the hymn is presented as her own commission rather than a poet's work. Sources differ on where Agastya heard it. Accounts of the Purana place the dialogue at Kanchipuram, while the temple tradition of Tirumeeyachur in Tiruvarur district, where Lalita is worshipped as Lalithambigai beside Shiva as Meganathar, holds that Agastya received it there. The best-known commentary, Bhaskararaya's Saubhagya Bhaskara, settles how the verses divide into names; its author completed it in 1728 on Ashvina Shukla Navami, during the autumn Navaratri.

The syllable people get wrong

In śrīmahārājñī, the second name of verse 1, the cluster jñ is one sound, j fused with the palatal nasal ñ, heard in South Indian recitation as 'gny' and in the north closer to 'gy': say shree-ma-haa-RAA-gnyee, with long aa and a long final ee. The common slip 'maha-rag-ni' shortens both vowels and splits the cluster into two syllables.

Questions

No human author is named. The Brahmanda Purana says the names were composed by the eight Vagdevis, the goddesses of speech, at Lalita's own command, and recited before her court. The hymn reaches the world through a second step: Hayagriva teaches it to Agastya in the Lalitopakhyana. Its most cited interpreter is Bhaskararaya Makhin (1690 to 1785), a Sri Vidya scholar who settled in Tamil Nadu and finished his commentary in 1728.
Most lines hold two or more names, and many names are long compounds. Verse 1 alone gives five: Srimata, Srimaharajni, Srimatsimhasaneshvari, Chidagnikundasambhuta and Devakaryasamudyata. Tradition notes that the text reaches a thousand without repeating a name and without padding words such as ca, tu or hi, which other sahasranamas use to fill a metre. Where a division is disputed, the count used in recitation follows Bhaskararaya's commentary.
Both come from the same Hayagriva and Agastya dialogue, but the Trishati has 300 names and was taught later. According to the account that introduces it, Agastya still felt something was missing after receiving the thousand names. Hayagriva had been told by Lalita not to reveal the Trishati, but agreed because of the devotion of Agastya and his wife Lopamudra. Its 300 names are arranged as twenty for each syllable of her fifteen-syllable mantra.
Verses 24 to 33 compress the war told at length in the Lalitopakhyana. The names describe her army of Shaktis, Bala setting out against Bhanda's sons, Mantrini killing Vishanga, Varahi taking Vishukra's life, Ganesha breaking the demons' obstacle-device, and the ten avataras of Vishnu rising from her fingernails. Verse 33 ends the episode: with the Kameshvara weapon she burns Bhandasura together with his city, Shunyaka. The next verses turn from story to mantra.
Not sure a mantra is enough?

Have your chart read before you decide

Chanting is yours to do, and free. But which deity your situation calls for — and whether a mantra alone is the right response — depends on your chart. Sometimes it is; sometimes it is not.
