Who Vishnu Sahasranama is
The Vishnu Sahasranama is the ordered recitation of one thousand names of Vishnu preserved in the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata. It is not a seed-syllable but a stotra in which each name isolates an attribute, a cosmic function or a deed of the Lord who reclines upon Ananta, who strode the three worlds as Vamana, and who abides as the inner controller of every being. Bhishma, fixed upon his bed of arrows, delivers the litany in reply to Yudhishthira’s inquiry concerning the highest dharma and the one deity worthy of constant remembrance. Subsequent acharyas—Shankara, Parashara Bhatta, Madhva and others—composed verse-by-verse commentaries that treat the thousand names as a complete theological lexicon. To speak of the Sahasranama is therefore to speak of Vishnu under the aspect of inexhaustible nameability: the one whose glory no finite catalogue can exhaust, yet who is approached precisely through this catalogue transmitted from the dying grandsire to the eldest Pandava.
Bhishma on the Bed of Arrows
In the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, after the great war has ended, Yudhishthira approaches Bhishma who lies upon the shaft-strewn field awaiting the sun’s northward turn. The new king asks which single deity is to be worshipped, which is the highest dharma, and by the recitation of whose names a person may pass beyond sorrow. Bhishma answers by declaring Vishnu the supreme refuge and then utters the thousand names, each name a facet of the same undivided reality. The epic frames the recitation as both battlefield testament and theological summa: the warrior who has upheld dharma through exile and war now exhausts language itself in praise of the Lord who upholds the worlds. Later tradition regards this moment as the authoritative origin of the Sahasranama, so that every subsequent chanting re-enters the conversation between the stricken patriarch and the righteous king on the Kurukshetra plain. The names that follow—beginning with Vishva and Vishnu—unfold from that dialogue and remain inseparable from it.
The mantra, in six scripts
The seed mantra, and the form most devotees chant daily. No initiation is required — it is open to anyone, including a parent chanting for a child.

Aim is the mantra, in a sense. The rest is address and salutation; the seed syllable carries the goddess. Where a practitioner has been given a very short practice, it is often Aim alone.
The syllable people get wrong
In the name viṣṇu the conjunct ṣṇ joins the retroflex sibilant ṣ directly to the retroflex nasal ṇ. Speakers often insert a faint vowel between them or flatten the pair into a single ‘shn’ sound, losing the successive retroflex contacts that the word requires.
